For those who weren't there and for those who were, a little wake up call.

The enemies were the squares, the Establishment, anyone over 30, the Pigs, the rich, and warmongers.

Unfortunately, the remedies were worse than the original disease and the warmongers are still with us. A Woodstock Nation did not appear. By 1975, most of the Underground Newspapers were dead or dying, and so was the United States. Let's review:

1960 The Pill.
1968 MLK dead. RFK dead. The Tet Offensive in Vietnam.
1973 Abortion legalized.
1978 Gloria Steinem tells her sisters that the men in their lives are the enemy. Adult bookstores spring up all over America. TV starts to get bad.
1980s Porn in hotels and on cable. No Fault Divorce finishes its sweep across the country. No kids and for $75 you're out. Just call 800-DIVORCE
1990s Soft core porn on TV. Parents letting their kids walk all over them. The internet just means more porn. Throw in some 'shock jocks' on the radio.
2000s Well, here we are. And guess what? Free Love always meant sex with anyone. "I don't need a piece of paper to live with my old lady." has helped any of you how?

And you've got young comedians on TV talking all that profanity you couldn't say on TV in the 1960s. Big improvement, right?

All those hippies went and had kids, and the kids grew up around dope smoking and alcoholic parents who thought, 'if it feels good, do it,' 'what d'ya mean, right and wrong?' John and Yoko sang "Whatever gets you through the night, it's alright, alright. Be it wrong or be it right, it's alright, alright."

Wake up, man. The 60s are over. You got your 'freedom' and what now? Parents in the 60s were criticized for being uptight squares who weren't willing to 'take a walk on the wild side.' So instead of wearing dresses and suits and ties and going to bars or cocktail parties, you're smoking dope or shootin dope and you did better? I don't think so, man.

Store owners around Haight-Ashbury today don't want no hippie reunions because they gotta clean the barf up from around their business establishments.

I was there in 1968. My parents had it mostly right. There were rules. Don't follow that 'no rules, just right' nonsense, that 'too much is never enough' nonsense. That 'I got stoned, man, and it was cool' Ichikoo Park nonsense that made some drug dealer rich and wrecked a lot of lives.

Who was the enemy - those parts of society we called establishment which appeared so sheep-like - caught in self denial and just pretending to be asleep. For those who went to explore and expand consciousness, the mass - the crowd - seemed inert, and rather dwindling in consciousness. Has this changed since ?

So, there may be nothing bad about sex, drugs, divorce and entertainment ... but it is all about the context you set, and whether or not you put it in between you and the rest of the world.

And freedom - I thought - is about how we make use of these tools in order to set free our own deeper potential as humans ... still, of course we're all free to sell our souls in the name of everything else, and keep on sleepwalk.

So ... where are we going to as people - to Disney Land forever ? I bet we're not.

Expand consciousness? What? You still had to deal with the man everyday. You had the long hair, the roach clip and a peace symbol somewhere, and what got expanded exactly? You had to pay the same bills as the squares.


You had to get a job or go on welfare. Smokin or shootin dope and gettin VD or knockin up how many different women and havin kids with some? How responsible was that? And by responsible, I mean to yourself.

No way it got better man. Different costume, same world.
