It's very sad when a report comes out that shows another 1.3 million Americans added to the poverty rolls, but when most of those being added are children, it really makes you wonder where America's priorities lie. The US now has 12.9 million children living in poverty many may not even get enough to eat. And American continue to brag about what a great country they have. You can't even feed your children. (How many still qualify for food stamps?) Here's the lowdown on how badly the poor & middle classes have fared under the Bush regime. http://money.cnn.com/2004/08/26/news/economy/poverty_survey/index.htm?cnn=yes
And the worst thing is that a lot of those middle class and poor people are actually going to vote for Bush because they have "Morals" and they think Bush follows the same ones they do because they are christian... Peace and Love, Dan
Religious belief is so strong in this country that if Jerry Falwell ran for president, He'd get a big number of votes. Didn't you know that once you find Jesus you are better then everyone else and everything bad that you ever did is absolved by the Lord? where do I sign up!!! yay Jesus!! (that would be sarcasm all ye thick-headed folks)
whats sad is a lot of people don't make enuff money to live off... but due to budget cuts social services cant help them. i know a girl who made $2.00 too much a month to get food stamps. and then there are people who take advantage of our food bank, they dont check income they give food to everyone who wants it and i know of people who have gone down to get thanksgiving dinner who make more than enough to feed their whole family...
Eh, contarary to popular belief, our forefathers were just as bad as our presidents today. THey wrote the constitution and said all men are created equal, but it meant all white slave owners can be free, and everyone else was fucked. They were hardcore capitalists more than happy to screw over working class people to get money... Believe it or not but Abraham Lincoln is very many times compared to Bush, they had a lot in common in the way they did politics. Peace and Love, Dan
Abraham Lincoln was not a founding father. so citing him as an example is a bit off for the "founding father" argument. sorry. thought I'd be an ass and pick on that.I have nothing better to do right now.lol. Now if you cited Thomas Jefferson who wrote the Declaration of Independence. Then I would understand what you mean. He owned slaves for christ sake and fathered 5 with Sally Henson...freeing all abut Sally. She was freed upon his death in his Last Will and Testament.
Hey, don't be disrespectin' on Tommy. Thomas Jefferson is THE MAN. But on topic, yeah, our forefathers were as greedy as capitalists can get. I think our constitution was originally pretty libertarian (before being rape- erm, amendmentized, that is), the founding fathers wanted as small a government as possible to just let everything be. A bunch of white guys writing a constitution stating that all men are created equal, as long as those men are white and own land, probably wouldn't have given a shit if some kids went homeless and hungry.
this is hardly to be wondered at in a culture that romatacizes and rewards aggressiveness or expects what it puts in its cars and its homes to isolate it from the kind of world such misplaced priorities resault in them being surrounded by. of course it is deplorable, dispeakable and shameful that such conditions exist, but no such degridation is to be wondered at as long as refusing to connect the dots continues to be promoted and perpetuated, whether in the name of any belief nor of anything else. rather it is a natural and inevitable consiquence of doing so. =^^= .../\...
i'd like to see the rate of growth in population size relative the growth of people living below the poverty line for a truer comparison. not saying the average joe in america is benefiting from bush...i just like seeing statistics.
Good idea, now I'm pissed I didn't think of that. Sure there may be more kids living in poverty now, but what is the ratio of kids living in poverty to kids not living in poverty compared to what it was, say, ten years ago?
don't worry.....I'm sure Karl Rove and his buds will massage and manipulate some statistics just in time for the Repub Convention so King George won't look so bad. Ahhhhh, "compassionate conservatism"....... synonymous with "let them eat cake."
I guess asking the dems for statistics to back up their claims is wrong then? Blindly adhering to this "anybody but Bush" rhetoric would be a much wiser and more intelligent decision I suppose? Do you honestly think that Kerry and co. are any more accountable or truthful than Bush and co.?
Obviously you dont know themnax if you believe his thinking lies there... personally i'm starting to agree w/pressed matt... I'm still voting for kerry cause of bush's damage to the environment and the lack of faith in a 3rd party winning, but my heart is elsewhere.
I would say the poor are eating, just not the right stuff. it's cheaper to buy 2 big macs from McD's than a turkey sub from Subway.
I'm sure they have, but if your working extra hours to make ends meat where's the time to cook a meal as opposed to microwaving an unhealthy frozen dinner.
They have, it's just cheaper to but 10 boxes of mac & cheese for 50 cents each than fresh fruits, vegetables, and good meat for five times that price. Besides, the kids in poverty probably aren't the obese ones. The obesity epedemic is hitting the middle and upper middle class kids who do nothing but sit at home watching TV all day, not the poor kids who can't get enough to eat.
Just FYI - it's not just the NUMBER of people in poverty that went up - it's the percentage of the population in poverty - so even with population increase, poverty did indeed go up. http://money.cnn.com/2004/08/26/news/economy/poverty_survey/index.htm?cnn=yes WASHINGTON (CNN) - The number of Americans living in poverty jumped to 35.9 million last year, up by 1.3 million, while the number of those without health care insurance rose to 45 million from 43.6 million in 2002, the U.S. government said in a report Thursday. The percentage of the U.S. population living in poverty rose to 12.5 percent from 12.1 percent -- as the poverty rate among children jumped to its highest level in 10 years, the Census Bureau said in an annual report.
