i have one of those spots around one dread. it may be because your roots and dreads are so tight near to the scalp and you dont have any loose...
wax is a styling product, like gel or hairspray. it will make your locks look like dreads in the 1st few week but it will stop them from forming...
you dont need an alternative. just leave your hair alone and nature will take its course!
people tend to sew the loose hairs into the locks (this is usualy on locks that are a few month old) also, once backcombed u can take some strands...

its best not to use wax at all. my locks looked just like your at 8 months.. it shows that the hair is locking up! :) they will be gone soon...

i couldnt agree more. but i was speakin as in the non knotty "perfect dreads" like the wax heads want!
dreads are a lifestyle, not a hairstyle. like life, there not perfect but you love them anyway... you take each day as it comes and watch them...
probably a couple of month. washing helps them calm down and knott up quicker so try washing a bit more. they will fall to pieces and the knotts...

naturals are where u just leave your haior alone to knott up, only washing them. when the hair starts knotting up, ripping them apart to form...
try using tea trea shampoo... it tends to dry ur hair out... just make sure u wash it alot so that its clean and not so oily. it will lock up,...
