Reagan returned in death to a Congress he loved to scold. "That big white dome, bulging with new tax revenues," he would say. "Tax and spend crowd," he called the inhabitants. "I have wondered at times what the Ten Commandments would have looked like if Moses had run them through the U.S. Congress." Associated Press ========================================================== Love him or Hate him, very surprised no discussion on this "Old Hippie" forum abut the man. I myself have very mixed feelings about his legacy. Raganomics, not bad, good Hippie idea, let business take care of itself, no place for government. Saving and Loan mess, the proof that I was wrong about that one! Iran Contra, if we are going to waste money supporting tyrants and puppet governments no matter what, might as well have the South American Drug lords pay for it,better than me and you in my opinion. No matter what, I do not think you can argue that it would be very difficult to find anyone anywhere that loved and believed in America, more than Ronald Reagan. And the way I look at that is the same as he did, America is simple you and me. RIP, you did your best All you can say about anyone in the end
He changed America, and with all due deference to his dedication to principle and his affability, not for the better. President Reagan served of the rich, for the rich, and buy the rich. Ronald Reagan was a liberal democrat until the early 1960s. I believe that as he acquired wealth he became more selfish and conservative. Finally turning into a neoconservative republican around 1963. He cut taxes for the very wealthy several times while Governor and President. As Governor of California he cut education funding several times. One of his first official acts as President after being sworn in was to cut the federally funded school lunch program. This act alone caused a great deal of suffering amoung the children of the poor. Who counted on the school provided meals as one of there major sources of food. These are the kinds of things as a liberal; I protested as unfair to students and especially innocent poor children. I could go on,but, there is no need for me to open wounds that have long since healed.
As a man, looks like he had some friends. But I didn't know him as an average joe. I only knew of him as a President. And not only reflecting on the things WE said but one of my biggest sad reflections is what he did to the energy program Carter enacted. Conserving energy is a passion of mine and as I have gone on in another thread about this...I won't here. Anyway, he's in a better place now....learning and reflecting about all of it. teepi
Bedtime For Bonzo... Reagan's husk of a broken, curled up body was taken to Washington cause "Mommy" won't let him die. He was gone a long time ago. They say that you shouldn't say anything bad about the dead... he's dead... good. IMO, and in my personal lifetime experience, he was the first Puppet president who I can recall. His Trickle Down theory of economics ruined the economy, but who cares about the facts that plague our nation? Tell us Nothing... Nothing keeps me up a night, yeah it does. The Iran Cantra Affair... HELL-LO !!! Where do you think the majority of this country's illegal drugs come form? Not from my backyard. Any Nam Vet can tell you how it was shipped here from Cambodia and Thailand... and it wasn't shipped out by homecoming GI's. The Gov't makes a tidy profit from, as they say; "Keepin' the niggers down". I use that phrase because it was coined in the 30's when the larger metroploitan cities began to use heroin to keep the poor, the tired and the hungry, huddled masses where they belong... Stoned out and not causing any trouble. And, I dare say he was the first president who used astrology to run the country... Ron..."Mommy, should I sign this bill today?" Nancy..."Wait until I consult with my astrologer Dear, then we'll know how best to proceed." Come On! And to boot... he was suffering from alzheimers when he was in office... He sure didn't communicate any greatness to me. Like I said... he's dead... good. I apologize in advance for the things I said here, should they be offensive to anyone, but it's the way I feel about the man who was.
I used to call Ronald Reagan Robinhood in reverse. Because, he would steal from the poor and give to the rich.
The banks will be closed tomorrow in honor of his death, thereby screwing every workingperson who needs to cash his paycheck. Thanks, Ronnie. You can fnuck us even after you're dead, though you remember it just as well as you did when you were alive.
Like I said in my posts in the Politics forum, I'm very thankful to Ronald Reagan for turning me from a young woman, back in the 80's, who followed her parents politics, to becoming a devoted liberal Democrat. He showed me the light and the true face of Republicanism.
Sheep shit... That's all I smell... sheep shit. Whenever I view an online new service or take a passing glance at the TV, I see the line of barnyard denizens lowing and shuffling to amble past the coffin. Or to get a camera stuck in their face for a sound bite. I just saw a snippet of a girl who wasn't alive when Reagan was president. She was boo-hooing like she had just lost a cherished family member. Please, please Rupert (Murdock), tell us what to think! It's soooo hard to do on our own. Sickening.
I'm sure glad I turned my tv"s off a few months ago.Sure is peacefull around here.Reading--fixing the place up--actual conversations--and no raygun corpse.----------hallaluyer!
I have been watching old movies with Regan in them on TCM. Where everyone was clean cut and a "good egg". With good pals like Earl Flynn, fight for the greater good of the world, (or hollywood). When men were men, and women were silly things with funny hats that spoke in a phoney english accent. It's just as entertaining as the news. Maybe more so. All though its customary to NOT speak ill of the dead. I feel we need some balance to the news blaring for the last week at what a hero he was. I didn't like him didn't vote for him the rich got richer, the poor got poorer I believe he cut funding to state mental hosp., releaseing thousands of mental patients. Tripling the homeless population. The soviet union was colapsing on it own, he was just at the right place at the right time. I have never been happy over anyones death. If I did, I might as well wrap my head in a table cloth and change my name to Abdul. I agree with Sam, the man left the planet years ago. His body just died. P.S. I'd rather see Ray Charles's funeral on TV. the music would be better.
I agree with Sam and WE1. He was a puppet and proud of it. Now they want to put him on our currency!!! What's the matter with these people. He's got a library, isn't that enough. By the way, I was late for something on Wednesday because of him. I live in So Cal and was on my way from Long Beach to Costa Mesa, 18 miles on the freeway. Left at 10am, usually takes 20 minutes and it took a bloody hour because the freeway was packed with folks going to say "bye bye Bonzo". Of course, this is Orange County California, the cradle of ultra conservatism, they even got an airport named after John Wayne, member of the John Birch society and a supporter of a certain very racially biased Southern Govenor. See, I have become a member of the ME society, got pissed off 'cause I was inconvenienced. Guess I wouldn't have been so irritated if it was for Ray Charles, bless his soul.
thanks folks! just reading this one thread makes me realize i have come to the right place. i thought i was the only one thinking that the rest of the world had gone certifiably INSANE! the "teflon prez" managed to screw the poor and give back to all of his rich friends and yet somehow be loved for it. everyone put down jimmy carter but he's the one out there helping build houses for the homeless and living it rather than talking about it. the great communicator my ass... it's called SPEECH WRITERS and acting 101. and i agree with you, grendel 44. i live in so cal now too and would have gladly sat on the freeway for ray charles, a true american icon, but never for the gipper. deezee
hahahahahahahha lol lol rofl!!!!!!!!! that was damn hilarious! i think its the funnyiest thing i heard in few days!
I watched quite a bit of the funeral in California last night and I found it extremely sad to watch Nancy break down on top of his coffin and start crying. I just wonder why she/he opted for such a public funeral when she obviously treasured the man and should have said her goodbyes in private, NOT in front of the entire world on t.v. and cable. I just don't remember this kind of a hoopla when Nixon died and was buried -- does anyone remember Nixons's send off? Was it like this? I loved hearing what Reagans kids said about him and it actually humanized the man more.....he was a dad and husband first, and THEN the Prez. Anyway, I felt like I was invading their privacy last night, watching the family react and I just found it in poor taste that we were voyeurs in his emotional send-off.......a little bit too much to watch and be privy to, really. Why did Nancy insist on this kind of intrusion into his family funeral.....did anyone else feel this way, or watch it last night???
Quote MarkN-"I believe he cut funding to state mental hosp., releaseing thousands of mental patients. Tripling the homeless population" Not to defend Reagan, as you may see from my earlier post- but the releasing of thousands of mental patients came from reform of the system, due to law suits and such things as the movie "One Flew Over the Cookoos Nest" mental patients were no longer held against their will unless proven a risk of being harmful to themselves or others. Not to say Reagan didn't cut funding.
Reagan: Awful governor - ronald rayguns killing protesters Awfuler president - poor poorer, rich richer and I don't feel sorry for him because he was already dingy in his last term. and does anyone else think the Bushes had his plug pulled to stem dubyas steady slip in the polls. Sure got the news off of Iraq and the quagmire that has always been. Are we searching those naked prisoners for WOMDs? Maybe Ronnie took one for the team? Hmmmmmm?
