OK, is it just me, or are festivals really expensive? I don't have that kind of money!!! I'm starting to think either there are no hippies going to these things, just rich kids with daddy's money, or people are taking out loans, or something!

I would LOVE to go to a festival, or even just a concert, but I can't afford it! Are there any free or cheap events tat are worth going to?

So much for hippies being stereotypically poor.

Does anyone else feel this way?

    Hey Lunar,
I agree, A friend just left today heading to the Bomaroo thing. I think the musicians , once they sign the record contrat, they are pretty much owned by that corparation. So, they probably can't do a free thing, even if they wanted too. I'm all for organizing a human jaugarnult and charging the gates!

    I think you're right, it's so sad!

Too bad there aren't a lot of local fests with local musicans!

(Hey, I'm in Ohio, too! Cleveland area - where are you? )

How expensive do you mean? Hookahville is not far from cleveland is generally cheaper than other festivals: like $40ish for the 2 days i believe.

Ya might want to check out the national Rainbow Gathering. There's no admission charge, there's no paying $10 for a bottle of water, in fact, there's not much of a monetary exchange at all. Check out the Rainbow Forum or go to www.welcomehome.org to learn a little more about it.

We just had the Folklife Festival in Seattle. They suggest a $5 donation, but it's not mandatory. I haven't checked to see what else is happening around here.

Hate to be negative, but if your going to crap on Fests I'm going to be rude.

    GET A JOB!!!

My mother is not rich and I don't need a loan to make it to a fest. The reason for that is a J O B. If you get out of your house and earn a living, you will have money to do things. If you don't believe in capitalism, get off your store bought computer, turn off the power, running water, sewer, and move into the woods and live off the land.

Most bands you find at fests like roo and Waka are not rich. They are not sitting in a castle counting the gold they just took from the poor after every show. The are making a living off the music they play. Its a job!!! They are making money just like the rest of the world.

You can get a lot of good things in this world for free, but you can get so many great things for a couple dollars.

Yes, Thank you bob for pointing out our shiftless, lazy atitudes. Wanting music for nothing!! How silly of us. We're just in our late 40's early 50's , what could we possibly know about working or how the world works. We need young brown shirt upstanding citizens to keep us doing the "monkey see-monkey do" thing. I forgot my 'ideal' was to become a small cog, serving a big wheel, in a huge machine, we like to call....America.
So, on behalf of disabled veterans of amerikca, I want to present you with the 'Humanitarian Working Class Hero Award'

and of course, a hand salute!

Wow bob, I would never have thought of that! Thank you so dearly! Now let's see... to get a job I'll have to pay someone else to raise my children for me... which is expensive. I'll have to go back to school, and get a part time job, probably working nights, but that's ok because my children will be sleeping. Once I get my degree things should be much easier, maybe then I could finally get a stove! Oh yeah, and rewire my house so that we can hook up the dryer... and of course buy a lawnmower so I don't have to keep borrowing the neighbor's. THEN I can take a nice little vacation and spend sometime with my husband and children at a lovely little music festival. It'll all be worth it then!

I never said that there was anything wrong with your festivals, and I think it's wonderful that you can afford to go to them. As for me, I'm going to keep shooting for the stove for a while. I'm sorry is this bursts you little bubble guys, but not everyone in the real world can make that kind of money, no matter how hard we try, it's just not possible, and often not ever desirable.
I'm not going to sacrifice my children and my life to go to a festival, and my point is that I shouldn't have to.

    Oh yeah, good points MarkN.

monosphere, I would LOVE to go to the rainbow gathering, and thanks for bringing it up! We're waiting until it's a little closer (two little one's under 3 in a car for hours isn't going to work for us.... maybe next year.)

Disabled veterans, and I guess women with children are excluded from what I said.

My mother raised my brother and myself alone. We never knew our father and he never gave a pennie to help my mother. I guess she is the only women in the world who can do it. My bad.

I know where you can get money to buy a stove. Sell your computer and stop paying for you internet connection. Computers are a luxury, and are not a necessity.

I don't have a degree, but still make enough money to live and chase music.

What is a "brown shirt upstanding citizens"? I ware t-shirts to work.

Don't sell yourself short. In most cases, making money is all about the effort you put into it.

Lunarforest, I go to oberlin college, which isn't far from cleveland at all and we have free or very cheap concerts all the time on campus, including a free folk festival every may. Local heads are always welcome :)

p.s. I thought hookahville was cheaper than that, maybe i was looking at the prices for one day...

Dandelion jam at sunshine daydream! tickets are just twenty-five dollars in advance.

I am with you, money is tight, and travelign costs money too, with the gas prices. usually i buy the tickets and my partenr buys the gas.

We also volunteer at the philly folk festival...we get in for free, and they feed you breakfast and dinner every day. they don't care if you've got a babe on your hip, you can request an office gig answering the phones all day.

    just a thought.

i wish i could afford bonaroo, and i would agree that a lot of the folks at these fests are there on mom's dime, and i've seen quite a few only there for the drugs who don't give a shit what local band is putting on a killer set for their entertainment. i tend to hand with the 40-50 crowd. better vibes.

drbeaker, I didn't know about the oberlin college having free and cheap concerts! That's great, I'm only 30 mins. from oberlin!! Thanks, I'll have to check those out!
I have volunteered at a few events in the past, and I should look into doing that again. Even with the kids it would probably work - I hadn't thought of that. :) And $25 is great for anything.... that's what I like to hear! ;)

Heya, thanks for letting folks know about the Peace conspircy
comUnity Peace festival. Yes the gate is 25.oo and that's suggested. No one has ever been turned away because of lack of $$. No wristbands, no security looking for folks who haven't paid. It's about coming together for a moment in time to lift each other up. The bands who play come from all over the country, and they come with no promise or expectations of a large purse. Gas money is divvied up for them, and it's all good. folks bring food to share, and volunteers cook it up in fine style. if yu care to check it out... http://peaceconspiracy.org/event

    See ya there!
