The results are in...the sentate says it's okay to drill!! What are your feelings on this issue? Did you do anything to stop it? What kinds of worthless efforts did you make only to be stomped down by the corruption in our government?

The following is a statement by NRDC's legislative director Karen
Wayland: "Drilling the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge won't make a
    dent in gas
prices at the pump or break our dependence on Middle East oil. This was
    really
a vote for Big Oil, not for the solid majority of Americans who oppose
    turning
America's last great wilderness into a vast, polluted oil field.
    President Bush
and his Senate allies resorted to a sneaky budget maneuver to get their
    way.
Now, Congress is one step closer to trading away an irreplaceable
    national
treasure for a few drops of oil that we wouldn't see for a decade or
    more. If
the oil industry can drill in the Arctic Refuge, then no place, no
    matter how
pristine, will be safe. But there is still have a lot of political
    tundra to
cross before this fight is over. We'll keep battling them every step of
    the
    way."

I'm perfectly fine with it. Happy about it actually.

ANWR is a very vast place, and only a miniscule percentage of it is going to be effected by the drilling. Something comparable to a postage stamp on a football field. Besides, all those images on tv and magazines that you see of "ANWR" is NOT ANWR. The media has gotten into the habit of showing scenes of beautiful Denali for propaganda purposes. And there is NO plans for drilling in Denali!

Now the reason I'm happy about this is because it's a good start. We need to begin weening ourseves off of foreign oil, so that we'll no longer need to maintain these kinds of relationships and fight wars in the Middle East.

You can't have it both ways. Either drill in the United States, or buy oil from the Middle East, and all the ugliness that comes with that.

Weaning ourselves off foregin oil? How about weaning ourselvs off oil in general. What we can get from drilling in the refuge will MAYBE be a six month supply, and not for 10 years. Why not spend the 10 year developing technology that will allow the US to not be dependant on oil at all.

This drilling is about the money. It is just rich people digging for more gold. More money for the billionaires in the oil industry.

We are being so short-sighted in the way we treat and waste our planet. And our future generations will be the ones to pay dearly for our selfishness now.

While this MIGHT make some Jobs for our friends in Alaska, I'm against it. Humans can take care of ourselves. Those animals and woods can't. I've always been a Tree Hugging guy. I did put in a call to MY Senators office. For what good it did.

There's an estimated 5 billion barrels in that region. The U.S. consumes about 20 million barrels per day. So that's about a 270 day supply of oil (5000/20=270). It's not going to solve the energy problem.

At a peak production of a million barrels per day up there, it would amount to about 5% of what the U.S. currently uses per day. And at that rate, the supply wouldn't last long. All of the deposits that are estimated aren't going to be extracted due to practical considerations. It would also take at least ten years for the project to start producing something.

It's mainly an issue of money for Alaska and the oil companies.

The Congress was going to do this back in the 80s but the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989 turned public opinion against it.

We'd be better off learning how to conserve and exploring renewable energy sources. Of course, Bush says conserving energy is a 'personal decision', whereas gay marriage is not a personal decision and is something that should be banned with a Constitutional amendment. :)

We don't need oil from Alaska and we don't need oil from the Arabs. The solution to our fuel needs is out in the farm lands of America. Bio-Diesel is the solution to our problems. Bio-Diesel can be made from both plant and animal fats. Hemp is a great source of vegetable oil as it needs little to no fertilizer or pesticide/herbicides. Vegetable oil is processed with lye and alcohol to make diesel and #2 heating oil. The reaction process leaves diesel fuel and glycerin. Bio-diesel has something like 50-80% less chemical and particulates emmissions than petro-diesel. The only downside is that it might make people crave fried foods because the exhaust smell like french fries.

I'd rather see our fuel dollars go into the pockets of American farmers than into the pockets of those greedy OPEC countries.

    From the Fox article:

"One Republican senator after another argued that with foreign imports accounting for more than half of the oil America uses, every available barrel should be pursued."

I wish they would talk this way about conserving energy and other resources. Every little bit counts. If people conserved just a tiny amount, it would eliminate the need to drill in Alaska. Instead, squandering of energy is seen as a God-given right.

The government used to tout conservation of energy with public service announcements. But for the past 20 years, there's been little incentive for conserving energy by the federal government, not even the mere mention of it.

    heh, this is from a michael ruppert article a couple days old, the neocons believe conservation is bad;

THE MOST EVIL STATEMENT I HAVE EVER HEARD
Detroit News columnist Thomas Bray recently described an interview with two "experts"; authors who come from the corporate/industrial/Neocon camp. The aberration of his thinking is symptomatic of the guilt we all share and the consequences we all seem to be begging for.

"We will never stop craving more," say Huber and Mills, "nor should we ever wish to. Energy is what brings light out of dark, civilization out of disorder, prosperity out of poverty."4

Nuclear power is the way of the future, in the logn term it's probably cleaner than anything else aside from HYdro but we are too vast to have an effective nationwide hydro electric system.
