"i wouldnt bother trying to come to the South carolina regional....it
never really materialized....i've been in the woods here for weeks
now and the only people that showed up were some wingnuts, ,who only
made things more difficult......add to that i just got out of
Newberry county jail for camping in the sumter national forest....

<DELETED> and some others are still in there doing 20 day sentenceces
    for camping

they arrested 8 of us and took us rite to county for camping....the
judge supported the decision cause we were "rainbow"

me and my road dog got bonded out through one of his old
friends...now we're trying to fly up enough cash to get some of the
    others out

the 5 or so people that {strangly} avoided jail were on private
property camping, but seemed to have left state by the time i was
    free again....

long story short, NO GO on the south carolina rodeo!"

Wow thats a pretty serious charge there buttercup!! Unfortunatly what brother wrote is true, I have spoke to a couple a the kids who were put in jail for camping. Jahma, i say if you want to join them thats your perogitive, but don't misinform others yourself, people need to know the truth and when it comes to something as important as maybe being arrested, I thank you measa420 for informing people who may be headed there!

Well unfortunately Sumter National Forest requires anyone including "rainbows" to have a permit for undesignated camping areas.

"Groups of more than 75 people require a special-use permit to camp in either a campground or undesignated area. Groups of any size camping in undesignated areas will need a visitor pass/permit. Contact the local District Office."

Probably a free permit, but a hassle to acquire, and hippies hate hassles!

Please clarify, do they require a permit for all people, or just groups of 75 or more. Cuz they all require a permit for more than 75 and I was led to belive (but don't know for sure) that there were less than 75 there. Only 20 were arrested, not 76. I just wanted to know.

How unfortunate! I flead South Carolina in 2001 and haven't been back, it's the worst state in the country, I can say that I'm From From there. We always hung out at the Congree Swamp National Monument Park just south of Columbia.

    Hi G & M and kidz

Well most national forests don't require a permit just to camp, but it sounds like they are tougher in Sumter NF than most places, and only let you camp in the pay campgounds without a permit..... There are also similar restrictions in some places out West; and then there is the whole enforcement issue, not always fairly enforced ("we don't like yer kind roun' here").

thanks for the info. I had seen that there were some areas of NF like that, but this is the first time I've heard of anyone actually being arrested.

The author mentioned in another email that DNR was the agency that made the arrests, so wherever they were, it would have been on State, not Federal, land. Was that Red Brick Campground, or whatever the name was, where folks were supposed to rendezvous for the South Carolina thingy, a State Campground?
