I keep trying to buy another vintage Kaftan off ebay but due to that horrible thing called 'fashion' they are currently 'in' apparently and going for ridiculous amounts of money. So I was thinking of just getting some psyche fabric and dusting off the old sewing machine and attempting to make one. Anyone have a good pattern or know where I can get a pattern free/cheapish?
    Many thanks :)
    Something like this.....

Caftans are really easy. Just trace around the one that you have in the picture (inside out) and cut pieces that are slightly larger to have room for seam allowances. Someother patterns to check out, McCalls 4002, Burda 8536, Simplicity 8895 and Vogue 7335. I have also found some great old patterns at thrift stores, where they are usually less than a dollar. I might be willing to trade a pattern, if you're interested pm me.

    I just found a neat website: www.modestclothes.com
I think it is for Muslims, but there's a very simple pattern for a caftan, it doesn't have sleeves like the one in your pic, but you could improvise.

I dont know if its "Fashion" that making it cost alot.... I have several that i bought off ebay and paid over 50 bucks for each of them... That was several years ago... I think there just desierable... You could just draw a pattern and attempt it on cheam muslin fabric before you use your good fabric... Get some newspaper or large paper and just draw out the shape... Its a fairly simple design... just measure around your bust and shoulder to find out how big it needs to be... It should be pretty simple...

They sell patterns at my local fabric store for caftans. They are located in the ethnic section or the costume section of the pattern catalog book.

They've always been relatively cheap for me, no more than £10 or so. My fashionista friend has informed me that its the key look for spring, which is cool but pushes up all the prices.

I hate when that happeneds. When something you love ends up becoming the "in" thing in fashion, and then you're like ......damnit, now I don't wanna wear it coz I'll go buy gas and see 5 other people wearing the same friggin thing! That urks me.

I got one on sale at the saks outlet for 30 bucks last month, I was shocked. Trina Turk and Tahari have a lot out this season and if you know where to shop you could end up getting a 200 dollar one for 30 bucks like me:)
