It's unfortunate but things like insurance costs have to be considered. As I approach that point in life when I really could buy a plot in the woods, I've begun to consider practical ways to start something. All input / co-pondering is most welcome. How remote? I suspect a % of residents would value trips to the "city" now and then. Medical issues too. Plus perhaps some folk might need at least part time jobs (in the city) to buy a few items they need/want. (craft supplies, medical, clothing etc) The commune provides basic shared shelter. Shared labor and $ needed to make it work. Gardening: in any group you'll have a few who labor above and beyond. Conversely you'll have a few who slack off. So how might this be set-up? small "owner" plots where produce is exclusively for the gardener? I think a group of self or part time employed people could maintain a sustainable project. Granted I'd rather not work at all, but part time is better than full time. Sure I haven't scratched the surface....help
Heya Explorer, Most places cheapness of the land has much to do with closeness of employability. The further you get from normal employability the cheaper the land is - this generally translates - the further from the cities. After you get1 1/2 hr. away from the fairly easy access to job markets, interest dwindles. After 3 hrs., it's basically gone - so 3 hrs. away is good for isolation. With the computer, isolated is no longer isolated - nor is the ability to make $$ the green energy. Many entrepreneurs, in whatever field you may so desire, operate through the internet media. With online banking and all you can travel the world , work everywhere as your own boss and heheh be welcome everywhere as a potential employer/taxpayer. World citizenry is not so far away - nor does it have to be a bad thing unless the rules get too contrived.... in every system the world has ever come up with there have always been those who live on the fringes - and some fairly well - very happy with their own chosen levels of interaction with world at large. Any thing you do must be able to be done by another - the Way for one cannot be so difficult that it cannot be done - and so in the Doing are the lessons needed, any excuses utilized to contravene must be recognized as excuses, which with the reasons for them taken away...... and just why are we not living as we choose ? ?... There are so many of us out there Doing it - from small individual size to near town size groups.... they can be found......Each at the level we find to be comfortable /acceptable to the individual. So a need comes to show a way to live by means of a much lower expenditure. And communities do just that. My own take is that you will see communities multiply in the near future as a way to make travel and living location accessibility, as easy as breathing in and out - as we gather and go apart for individual experiences and come back again together to share.... growing on - ahh but then I'm just a dreamer "but I'm not the only one". Change happens with each individual.... changing.
