okay, i dig UM, Phish and the Dead (the Dead to a lesser extent), and i am considered a hippie at my school. what i don't get is why people have to bash musicians and hippies on the music section of hip forums. it makes no sence, if you feel like bashing music don't do it here, if you feel like bashing hippies you're DEFINITELY in the wrong place lol w/e you guys can think what you want, you shouldn't get so worked up about all this tho.
well bashing would be considered something lik "those guys are dicks, or they cant play, or thats pop music" i was just curious and stating my opinion. i dont think in black and white
you came on a forum full of hippies just to say this??? dude, looks like you're the one who needs a career, because you have too much time on your hands. get a life.
I like phish and keller out of all the jam bands... And of course, the grateful dead I shouldn't have to mention.
i just read this thing and was really happy to see the clear heads in here w/ such a rudely directed but interesting u.m. thread. as for my opinion, umphreys sounds busy, proggy, and shreddy, and they have a different flow and attitude than any other jambands i've heard. but i haven't seen any umphrey's shows...seems like they have the sound to draw the drug-hippie crowd.
umm... ok. i've never heard Umphrey'syet. BUT i am going to amsterdam next week and attending a festival called amsterJAM, renamed JAM in the 'dam, due to copyrighting probs....and Umphrey's is headlining this show (www.amsterjam.net). so i can only assume they are a JAM band, but i will get back to you when i get back from the 'dam. peace! LP
Have fun! I was over their last year for Ekoostik Hookah and String Cheese Incident. Its quite the experience
ok... i thought i posted this, but i guess it didn't take. i've yet to hear Umphrey's music, BUT, i am going to amsterdam next week, and attending a festival called "JAM in the 'dam", changed from "amsterJAM" due to copyright probs. (www.amsterjam.net) Umphrey's is a headliner, so i can only assume that they are a JAM band...i'll get back to you when i return from the 'dam! peace. lp
FRANK1 says "The hippy movement died at Altamont in December 1969"...wow did you hear that on a VH1 behind the music special? if thats what you honestly believe then you sadly have had your eyes closed for the last 36 years.......hippies are alive and well, of course their are the "posers", but there were "hippie posers" in the 60's.....there will always be genuine good people that i refer to as hippies.....but i don't think hippies are the problems at Umphree's shows, i think its the music. they can throw down a little, but for the most part its tired music....i've heard there sound a million times in so many other bands...when i saw them play in San Fran it wasn't intresting....Umphree's is missing somthing, they are missing a defining element to seperate them from everybody else....it was not until Phil Lesh came out and started playing bass with them that everything picked up and actually started to sound like unique music...... and on a side note FRANK1, if umphree's doens't want to be a jam band, why did they cover so many Phish and Dead tunes a couple of years ago? almost every second set was a huge phish jam like "mikes>hydrogen>weekapaug" ????
I have a question? who has been hating on UM? I really dont think that many ppl have been. The only times i have seen it is when ppl have been like "yo phish is the fucking worst um is the shiiittt."
ok so i just got back from langerado and once again saw umphreys. well only stayed for the first two songs, but unfortunately couldnt walk far enough away to where i could not hear them. it seems like a new type of jazz fusion to me. they fuse stale and phlat. there, now im umphreys hatin. i think the only people who dig there music are people who are afraid that they wont have a large enough crowd to sell there drugs too anymore.
good then dont watch em no one will miss you when they take over the world we all love who we love right im sure you will have fun hoola hoopin at the next cheese show u see... yup thats right not enough peeps to sell drugs too thats about the dumbest thing ive heard you write yet is it that you wish you could play like brendon and jake,, but i do remember all the deadheads on summer 92 tour sayin the same thing about phish owell seems they did pretty good 4 themselfs
I thought UM rocked at Langerado. It was such a beautiful day and they just let it go. I have seen better from them but I def wouldnt be hating on their Langerado set. Folks, if you can get your hands on it, take a listen and enjoy!
