I usually listen to music from the 60's and 70's, and i dont like much of whats out there today...i do try and search for newer bands and there are a ton out there that are pretty good, and they have a similar sound to those back in the 60's and 70's. and from time to time i will find a song on the radio or tv that i might catch myself listening to...but most of the music i like is from back then...but if you think about it most music that comes out today has a smiliar sound from back and are influneced from back then.

The Problem is that all young man and woman want ABSOLUTLY to be into the last mode (or fashion) ...exemple : 2 of your best friends love Nickelback ...to be united as a gang or whatever...the 3rd friend start to love Nickelback...
Another exemple: if a lot of your friends love rap: There's a pressure upon u to like rap music. This is always question of fashion...
So much young people don't take risk to discover another kind of music...they follow their friends who followed their friends...they are like cows.
People should hear their deep envy and needs in music...hear what their soul wants to hear...with an open spirit...(maybe they need to hear sgt pepper under mushrooms to help)
Mtv is for something into this...they told to the young generation...what is rebel...what is the definition of rebel music, what they had to hear...and music give them the answer ...it's all ready for naive young people...
It's one of the reasons why Cobain killed himself...he don't supported to become a product of MTV...

I love the 65-75 music because he had more soul , spirit, and risk in this music...they really experiment a lot of way to do music...some bands really travel into music...they built their own world...they are adventurous...they were not the cows of music...but really actors of a movement who in one year moved faster(66to67) than in the last decade of rock'n roll...

In the early 80's rock n' roll took his last breath ,and after long haired stupid hard rock bands loosed (faith in) their origin (early psyché blues hard bands)...
Hard rock is just an exemple of a music loosin touch with their deep feelings...
But i talk generaly ...i like some 80's bands but...rock n roll goldrush age was clearly behind them...
    I still hope that rock n' roll is a Cycle...rollin' like a Wheel... :)

I prefer music from the 60's and the 70's cuz they were more real, engaged and they made greater music. I think that now, music is a commercial product like an other. They did not do music to make money, they made it to express themselves. From the 90's i like Nirvana, from the early 80's the Clash.Rock is dead but he may rebirth one day...

I's very logical to say that rock is dead if you don't look further than your nose.

Of course old music is the best....And nowadays for young artists is so hard to think of something new...., because all good things are in the past;) But everyone has it's own opnion...Mine is that I just love old music.....

I think it depends what ur into. Metal has made a huge comeback this last year with some really excellent new bands. Rock n' roll on the other hand.....while there are some good new bands coming out of the woodwork such as kasabian, the zutons, the killers and various other new bands, I agree that there are some utterly crap bands too - and most of them emo I have to say. What i will say is that if you base new music on what they play on mtv and most commercial radio then you will never find decent new music! You really have to do some exploring to find it, but it is there - trust me! lol.

    Peace and love

Solid-state technology has its place, but I have yet to hear "distortion" that has the richness, character, and drive that fuzz from a tube amp does. You just have to listen to the variety of guitar sounds from that era, such as Hendrix, Cream, Quicksilver, Canned Heat, Jefferson Airplane, Led Zeppelin, Zappa, The Fugs, The Stones, ... Or how about an organ with a rotating Doppler speaker cone on top of it? A mellotron? And who uses a harpsichord, a sitar, or even a mandolin in rock these days?

60's and 70's isn't "old music". Classical is old music, such as pre 20th century.

of course your not going to hear that stuff by watching mtv or listening to the radio...

Yeah their's some very good new bands (Vines,Hives,BRMC,Kasabian,Interpol etc...) but i've got to be honnest ...their sound (of the large majority of modern bands) don't travel as far as psychedelic 65-75 sound...
You should hear (while you take a trip if u can) some of the Byrds songs of "Fifth dimension" lp or the Jefferson Airplane "Surrealistic Pillow"...it's more adventurous than all i hear now...more deep...you're really far out man with those kind of sound...
Well it was the pot and acid generation...so the sound was naturraly deeper than what the rocker are doin' now! too much alcoohl don't make u discoverin' new landscape to play your music...modern bands often lack of risk...
But i love a lot of modern bands...it's just less deep...it just don't touch my inner soul as hard as the sound of those historic glorious years of exploration...
If the modern rocker generation take more psychedelic drugs ...it will maybe evolve but not before.

I like a lot of old music and a lot of new music. I am always looking for new stuff to add to my collection and I like to keep an open mind and allow myself to enjoy all types of music.

You know, this whole thread brings up a thought that's been on my mind lately. Back in the 60's and 70's, some of the things done by popular artists at the time (i.e.-the Beatles, Elvis, etc.) were considered extremely risque and frowned upon. At one time, music that promoted dancing was even an extreme shock. Over the generations, the shock factor has gotten bigger and bigger. Back then it was Elvis, now it's songs promoting violence, rappers exploiting women. Which brings me to my question. If every generation gets increasingly worse with their risque factors, how bad will it be when I have kids? It's rather frightening, actually, because it's a disturbing thought that they haven't even hit rock bottom yet. I try to keep an open mind to all types of music, but it's such an influence on youth. If music today is promoting violence and disrespect, how bad is it going to get in the future?

His later commercial stuff might have sucked, but "The Bob Seger System" (Ramblin' Gamblin' Man/Tales of Lucy Blue) was some pretty heavy stuff. The same thing started happening to the Steve Miller Band after "Number 5."

a lot more music is written soley for selling records now-a-days. im not saying that never happened in the 70s and stuff but there were at least a large amount of artists just writing good music not for some company.

Good music is out there. Music from the 60's and 70's was and still is good to listen to. That is all I listened to for a long time but eventually I started to listen to other music. Music is a wonderful thing and I don't think that we should deprive ourselves by listening to one era of music.

Music today is healthy and a lot better than most of the bands you all preach on. The Beatles and the Doors are outdated and they aged horribly. The Stones aged quite well and Brian Eno did too.
