I to want one....but anyway...they are quite annoying at times(still the greates vehical)they Drink alot of petrol too..grrr...any way i dont know too much about them seeing as im only 15 years old but i have been told they do have lots of problems now and again, but you could get one and fix it up for about 3k or maby less so id say your about halfway there......and if any one else says other wise then they are more then likly right i dont have reliable sources.......but then again if anyone else helps you help me too......sorry i could not be of too much help but i hope this tells you about them a little bit.......
The engine needs rebuilt about every 60,000 miles or less. They require moderate upkeep. http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=73220
www.thesamba.com, i'm assuming your an american in which case you will probably pay 3-8,000 dollars for a decent one
but alas...they are gas guzzlers....my friend has on (hes 50) I have no clue how much he spends on it, but he used it to ride around the country with friends, and If its just for you it seems like a waste becasue of all the gas you'd be guzzling
What about an old Toyota Hiace? Are they cheap where you are? If you get a Hiace with a Y series engine ie the 2Y,3Y or 4Y these engines do not require valve clearence adjustment unlike VW Kombis. If you do get a Kombi it is crucial that you keep the valve clearances right! As far as fuel consumption goes I am told that a Kombi uses about 12L /100k .I don't know what that is in MPG.This was the best I ever got out of my last Hiace but in the wind it would go up to about 16L/100k.No van with any space is that good on fuel especially if you drive over a long distance in the wind. All vans driven in the wind have far less roadholding than normal cars. If you get into the wind then all you can do is slow down. Suzuki Carry vans I would think would use much less fuel but have much less space. But they are kinda cute.
Dunno i know that where il live you can find some for not too much money , like 4000-5000$ CAN but they will need ``minor reparations``. You could also try to buy a californian vw van , they will have less rust on them.
My van came here from Nevada. That's why it's relatively rust free. It's also german, NOT mexican, made. I think I should put that in the original post.
Don't waste your time or money on a VW, they are definitely NOT good cars. They're cool-looking and have lots of character, but who cares about that? If you want something reliable and/or efficient look elsewhere.
You miss the point- no cooling system. The engine wieghs 165 lbs and is easily rebuilt. The vehicle totally lacks complexity. Anyone can work on it.
