Drumming is great, I highly recommend it-- especially since you're a bass player. You may find that by studying drums/percussion a little bit, it will help your bass playing rhythmically and your approach to playing with drummers in the rhythm section.

As someone who has floated between instruments for years, here's what I would suggest. Borrow an instrument from a friend, or if no one has one, you may be able to rent one (especially in the case of band/orchestra instruments). When you start, try to take at least one or two "lessons"-- either informal with a friend or with a professional teacher-- to get an idea for basic techniques. Get books, videos, whatever you can to help you develop. If you then decide to buy an instrument, at least you've tested the waters beforehand; by going this way, you're not plunking down money for an instrument you may end up not playing much or really enjoying. Hope this helps.

I like working with a Djembe (mostly) and other assorted percussion instruments for rhythm practicing.
