after 3 1/2 yrs i finially finished my rock/koi pond. it turned out beautiful. but i have well water, and after a day my kois' died. anyone reccommend what chemicals to use for the water?
I'm sorry about your koy Also always be careful of temperature changes! Just putting a new fish in a new tank can kill them if there's a big temp difference, give them time to adjust (like by hanging the pail, bag or tank you got them in in the pond, so the water slowly reaches the same temperature, rather than just putting them in directly).
Do you live in a warm climate or cold climate... did they die in winter or summer... how deep is your pond? If it is because of well water, it must be because the water is too hard. Could be other things... you know you can buy a test kit to test for things like Nitrates, Ammonia, hardness, etc. ide do that, and than if your water is messed up in one of those categories I would go from there to helping your water and finding what to use in it. At the fish store I work at we do free water testing, all you have to do is bring in a sample of water...
I live in Omaha Nebraska. they say koi fish can survive in cold weather. my pond is 300gallons. i have well water, and it has alot of iron, makes it hard for koi to breath. i just need to find out how to test it and what to put in it. Thank you all for your ideas and concerns!! (((((((((((((((((((((((((( hugs )))))))))))))))))))))))))
koi can do fine in cold weather with snow and all as long as the pond is at least like 4-6 feet deep... than they can just kind of hibernate on the bottom of the pond... you could also heat the pond butw/e its prob enuf. try to find a store round where you live that specializes in fish... they should have something there to get rid of the iron. and you know I think if you wanted to you could just get a bunch of Reverse Osmosis (RO) water and put it in your pond.
