hey tgpi, i heard phish play roundabout by YES (which is their easiest to play, worst song ever by them), and they fucking sucked on that too! it was horrible. string cheese played it, that was tight. and most YES songs are 20-30 mins in length to begin with, see it live and you will realize why they will smoke phish anyday. just listen to gates of delerium and how they all come together in that song and just build it up for 15 minutes to the ultimate breakdown in rock history, then talk to me about chemistry.
all the 'art rock' acts of the 70/80's ie. Yes, ELP, and the like.. They put out a lot of terribly long songs that were nothing more than musical masturbation, imho. I feel their shows were just hours of mediocre at best to boring as hell jams, poor experiments in mixing classical and rock music, and zero live entertaining ability. I never did get it........
yea, and who the fuck are you? musical masturbation? you really are fucking stupid. gates has not one moment of classical music elements besides the fact that it is organised perfectly for being a long song. and ELP? they blow. when it comes to YES, you either get it or you dont. most people dont. you are one of them. and just because they dont go on stage and stay some stupid shit and try to act cool by dancing around like some fucking monkeys doesnt mean they arent entertaining.
No one on this board should ever call phish or the grateful dead overrated, unless, I mean, you and a few of your friends were also born to play music together. Seriously, there is a reason these bands sold out huge arenas for years, BECAUSE THEY KNOW HOW TO PLAY TOGETHER, which is what makes a band good. People are putting green day in the same category as phish... come on.
Relplayer i really enjoy YES, but i dont understand why you refuse to acknowledge to talent that phish has. You dont have to like them, but as someone said they were born to play together. You sound knowledgable just a little bitter towards phish for some reason.
To suggest that you can't criticize an artist unless you yourself have the same degree of skill or what-have-you is ridiculous. By this line of reasoning, if you you go to a gourmet restaurant and you don't like the food or the service you can't criticize it or the restaurant-- unless you've had comparable experience working in a gourmet restaurant. In the end it doesn't matter how long [insert band name here] has played together, what kind of musical rapport they have on stage, the size or loyalty of their fan base, or anything like that; for the purposes of forums like this, it boils down to music being subjective and people having different tastes. The best thing you can do is just deal with it and not bother trying to persuade people otherwise; if (hypothetically) your favorite color is blue and you can't stand the color red, how can I convince you that you're wrong?
