When I saw this sig pic by Goatman88 it occurred to me that the peace sign meant V for victory during WWII. My mind started to wander as it sometimes does and I thought, "Does that mean the peace sign means the opposite of what it used to mean, since it was once a symbol of war? Or was the V for victory sign also a peace symbol, since we were fighting a truly evil enemy and the only way to achieve peace was through victory?" What do you think?
I'm pretty sure but not 100% it was covered in history the v sign is the other way round it goes back to the achery warfare where to shoot one you needed those two fingers by flashing that you were saying victory like you said but I believe also up yours lol hope that makes ya feel better
Wasn't originaly two fingers stuck up close together, like the peace sign you see statues of Mary or Jesus portraying?
I don't know. When people are being inagurated or whenever they swear they put up their fingers stuck up close together. I don't think that has anything to do with peace, it means they are speaking the truth.
The backwards peace sign in england is the same as flashing the middle finger. It goes back to the many wars with france in which english longbow men would taunt the french by sticking thier two fingers up at them as if saying "fuck you french wankers, weve still got our fingers and we are going to kick your arses!" this is because if the french captured an english archer they would chop those two fingers off so they couldent fire a bow again.
Not sure but I think it was formed to mock the symbol used in WW2. WW2 soldiers used it to symbolize that we had done something good and right and then during Vietnam it meant that we really haven't done anything that great... Or maybe it means victory through peace? I dont know I'm tossing out Ideas
Thanks Antinomy. So according to Emmett Grogan, it started out as the backwards V sign meaning, "up your ass!" as BlackHoodedCrow and Graham pointed out, hippies misinterpreted it and it became the peace sign. Some of the best things in life are created by accident.
Two fingers have always meany war until the 20th century, as a matter of favt the "euro flip off" (peace sign backwards) was originally used by english longbowmen to mock the french in the hundred year war (the french would remove those fingers whenever they caught a longbowman because then he couldn't fire his bow, the ultimate in medievil weaponry) americans truncated it to one finger, churchhill coined v for victory because english troops would flip of german troops so instead of F u it was something less offensive but just as viable.
There are a couple of different ways that Jesus and the saints hold their hands in Orthodox Iconography. Each has a particular meaning. Below you see the index and middle fingers making a "peace" sign, the ring finger joined with the thumb, and the pinky sticking up. This configuration symbolizes the trinity (three stickin' up), and the ring/thumb = the two natures (human/divine) of christ: (Footnote: It would be interesting to see how the Oriental Orthodox Churches of Egypt, Ethiopia, Syria, Armenia, etc. portray this. There was a deep schism in the 5th C. church over the nature(s) of christ with these churches proclaiming he had a "single divine nature".) This one is specifically used as a symbol for blessing. When the Orthodox priests use it, the often accompany it (esp. during the liturgy) with the words "go in peace" as they make a front facing (i.e. toward the crowd/laity) sign of the cross. In this particular case, the ring/index/thumb symbolize the trinity and the index/middle his dual nature:
For those of you who care, this answers the Oriental Orthodox question about the dual/single nature of Christ represented in the "Monophysitic Churches". This looks like an 18-19th C. icon, and may have been made under influence from other Orthodox Churches, and the new comradery between them. I may be off. What a beautiful icon though!
