So, I've always had poofy/ frizzy hair but it never really bothered me until I started to grow my hair out. Now that it's down to my collarbone, it can poof out broader than my shoulders, especially in the Georgia humidity. I have naturally wavy hair that can get curly only if it drys naturally and I don't brush it (even running a hand through it straightens it out), but the waves turn into an ocean of frizz. My hair is also really thick which I've always liked, but now it makes my hair looks 10x as bad. What do all you other frizzy haired ladies do? I straighten occasionally but it takes upwards of an hour and I won't do that in the morning, only on special occasions. I use a de-humidifier hairspray but it doesn't do much, even though it's supposed to last for 12 hours. I'm willing to try just about anything!
I have the same thing... and I do nothing. I have yet to find a way (without putting grotesque chemicals on my head, which I refuse to do) to naturally get it to curl. My problem is that instead of my hair curling together, each hair curls individually causing it to become so wide I can see it out of my peripheral vision if I wear it down. My current solution is a pony tail every day.
For a more natural approach, you could try jojoba oil or Burt's Bees avocado hair butter treatment as a styling aide. Or for something slightly less natural but perhaps more effective, there's this stuff called 'secret weapon' by john frieda/frizz ease that works well.
My hairs really poofy....I got it layered once thinking, 'Yep, if I layer it it'll somehow get magically better.' It didn't work...instead it grew more out and crazy! I really don't know what you can do....The most I can do for my hair is put water in it...and that only works for about 20mins..... sorry I'm not much help.... I think sometimes hair just has a mind of it's own!
It's funny how many of us try to reach exactly the opposite effect... I use bottles and bottles of hairspray to give my hair more volume because it is flat as hell... I'd kill for a head of hair like you're describing.
my mom just bought from wal-mart a straighening iron that u can use on your wet hair... it sounds bad but it really works. Believe me I know the frizzy hair thing.. it runs in the family. if you use that w/ John Frieda's Frizz-Ease Wind Down Relaxing Creme.... its great and lasts til you shower again.
okay, i've got to say..i'm an expert with this, I have crazy wavy yet straight in some spots, curly-curly in others, frizzy frizzy hair- it's thick, it's 6 inches from my ass. Your best investment ever will be a diffuser. You know, they're cup shaped attachments to your hair dryer, and they have little spikes in them. What it does is it lets your hair naturally flow around the spikes/cone things, and it dries them. It does take a little longer than just regular blow drying, but definitely not as long as straightening. Be sure to experiment with different hair products for curly hair. I've tried hundreds of different products since i was 13, and for me the best is some yellow shit for curly hair by Marc Anthony, (not the singer...i think ) but it's really expensive. Sometimes though, that's just what you have to do when you have hair like this. If not, just use a solid strong-hold gel. If you have thick hair, don't use moose...it's a waste. Don't overuse product, that weighs it down and makes it flat. Hang your head upside down to do it, it's easier that way. Contrary to what the girl above said, I am going to definitely recomend getting it layered- This amplifies body through all your hair, this way it wont be all big and curly all at the bottom, and you wont get that triangle head. Getting my hair layered made it look AWESOME. You have to be willing to invest money though, don't get a conair 25$ hair dryer, get one with quality, or else it will set your hair on fire (this happened to me!!!!!!) BOO on conair!!! Now for straightening, i'm still kinda working on this. But DON'T USE any products with WATER or alochol in it, water instantly creates waves and makes it all BLEH and nasty. I used to do the water thing all the time (whether curly or straight) like the above poster, and it does NOTHING. NEVER straighten your hair when it's wet, despite what it says on the box (especially if it's conair, they lie about everything, and their hair dryers catch on fire) This burns the hair, and causes a LOT of damage. Don't buy a straightener from a value shop like walmart or shoppers drug mart, they don't carry products with high enough heat. Go to a Salon Shop (not a salon, but the big stores where hair dressers go) They're fairly expensive, but again...well worth it, get one with a wide plate if you have thick hair, a smaller one if you have thin hair. Get one at the highest heat setting you can afford ( i mean like 250 degrees and up) and make sure it's a CERAMIC plate, NOTHING ELSE...anything else ruins your hair, trust me on all of this i've devoted too much time to my hair to be wrong. No matter what, if you want a nice soft look, with this kinda hair, you have to be willing to devote more than 10 mins to your hair. CuRLyyyyyyyy..... StraiGGGHHttt wooooooo......
There has to be some magic solution to this that doesn't take out an hour and a half of my day. I've tried blow drying my hair and it even takes the hair dresser 30-45 minutes, so with me doing it, it's at least an hour. And the straightening iron, I've tried that, but that takes even longer because you have an hour for blow drying, then another 30 minutes of frying your hair. I gave up wanting straight hair years ago, but I still haven't found how to make my hair curly. What I'm trying now is growing my hair to my ass... it will actually be so heavy it will have to be straight.
usually i don't care, but for work, i use frizz ease. it definately works. i use the hair serum, dream curls, and the secret weapon stuff. doesn't take long, i let it dry naturally, but my frizzy/wavy/sometimes straight hair that's over halfway down my back comes out curly.
I have the same kind of hair and I've been getting it layered for about 5 years now to take the weight off. Just make sure you go to someone who knows what the hell they are doing so you don't end up looking like a mushroom! My hair used to take an hour to dry, also. Now it takes maybe about 15 minutes max. I let it air dry just a bit after brushing it, while I pick out my clothes and have some coffee. Then just before leaving the house I dry it on a medium setting. Having my hair in layers though makes it really easy to straighten without a straightener. I just use a round brush and a blowdryer. Section my hair off and do the top two sections first, then the lower section. I use some frizz stuff put out by Dove. Its pretty good. Also, Loreal has an anti frizz serum that I'm addicted to. Its in a little orange pump, can't miss it at the drug store. Other than that I make sure I use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner every day. People say you aren't supposed to wash your hair everyday, but I have to or mine gets quite oily and feels gross. You also might want to try a leave in spray conditioner, though I'm not a big fan of those. If my hair has already air dried like in the summer, then I just take a quick curling iron to it and smooth it down and flip the ends out. That usually takes the frizz away. Good luck!
Good advice about the layering. With our type of hair, layering can either help the problem or make it way worse, so when I go get my hair done, I go to Gene Juarez (I know it's expensive, but I only need my hair cut once a year if they do it) and I always ask for someone who is experienced with black people's hair. That way, I know she will be able to deal with the texture and the curl. Remember, it's worth spending a little more to get a better cut job when you have this kind of hair.
This is the number one thing i can NOT grasp lol...when i got my hair layered it looked fucking amazing, and the salon lady was like, make sure you get a round brush and you'll eventually get the hang of it. This lady LIED to me, for the life of me i cant use a round brush lol
If anyone's seen on Home Shopping Network, they sell a straightening iron called "Maxiglide". I bought it, and it actually works! IT has these little pins on the iron that pull your hair straight as you use. My hair is so curly that i have to blow it straight with an attatchment, and then go back over it with a flat iron.(usually takes 2 1/2 hours). But with the maxiglide, I don't have to blow dry it first, it just has to be dry, and I finish in about an hour. Gawd, now I sound like a infomercial, but it does work. They sell it on hsn's website. Also, all beauty supply shops sell these blow dryer attatchments that look like a comb. You snap it on the end of the blow dryer and you don't have to worry about brushing it while blow drying. It makes it a lot easier. They cost about $4.
The lady who cuts my hair does it in such a way that I don't have to blow dry it, in fact, my hair is so dry to begin with they tell me not to. My hair is about down to my should blades and what I do is put in a little less than a quarter of a cup of mousse starting at the roots because there and the ends are my biggest problem spots. Then I use a pick to comb my hair, but only once through. Then I section off about 1' X 1' pieces and twist them lightly... this is really fast, no more than 10 minutes, and it keeps my hair curley.
oh yeah i forgot one thing i've tried just about every shampoo on the market, and i've found the best one is pantene pro-v for frizzy/wavy hair, or pantene for curly hair. It restores moisture like you wouldn't believe, and takes less time to straighten, because after blow drying it's way less frizzy
I just got back from your state and had the same problem. I can't keep my hair straight for the life of me on the east coast. I wore mine up the whole time but then yesterday i washed my hair with the hotel shampoo which was really cheap and somehow my hair looked better then it ever has before and last night I picked up a bottle from the grocery store and i got the same results this morning it's garnier and it's like 3 bucks and works better then anything I've ever tried.
round brushes make your hair curl under at the ends and the result makes me look like a 40 year old house wife I like regular vent brushes and then I go over mine with a straightening iron after it's dry.
I hate my hair layered. The last time I got it done I hated it so much that I grew it out.. for me it just ends up poofing up plus my hair isn't at the length yet where I can get it layered and still wear my hair up without a ton of hair falling out of the pony tail/pig tails/ braids. Even smoothing balm doesn't work. I have about 3 different kinds. =P I hate Georgia... pollen and humidity: my two worst enemies. What I tend to end up doing is after I was my hair at night, pull it back into a braid for the rest of the night and til I fall asleep, and then blow dry a little bit in the morning because it's still wet. That's the only way my hair is remotely straight, but then it looks dull. Grrr.
