iraq in the classroom

so in my world studies class we watched a special on the war in iraq. i was personally disgusted by it. well after we finished watching it we were told to write what we thought of it. i was called on to read what i wrote. and of course the majority of my class attacked me with their opposing views and criticism of mine, including the teacher. now that really pissed me off. i went on and i guess i offended the teacher in some way by talking about the war, so she told me to give her my paper, and she ripped it up, threw it out, and told me to keep my anti-american ideas to myself and out of HER classroom. so i told her to (as a teacher) keep her political influence out of OUR classroom because it isnt the best idea to push your opinion while teaching. so in conclusion i got a zero on the assignment, points off, and 100 minutes of detention. i still cant even believe this. how do i express my views without being penalized like this? what happened to my first ammendment?

your teacher's behavior is illegal, but all too common place. i would start by complaining to the proper channels in your school. if that doesn't work, then learn more here:

Demand to see the principle about this and try and get your parents to do the same, also write to the school board

Orginize a student movement on teachers unfairly grading, using your case (will give you more support then freedom of speach) and orginize a walkout and print hand outs far students to give to their parents about your unfair grading.

 

Ah... I hate it when teachers are like that. My French and Spanish teachers are all hardcore liberals, and while they talk about it in class, it's not like they'd disrespect someone else's opinion.

However, my algebra teacher was a Biblethumping Republican and when Bush won, my entire class kind of started gloating to me and the 2 or 3 other openly Dems in the class- calling us heathen babykillers, sluts, tell us we're going to hell, etc and she did NOTHING. It was even to the point where they made me cry (and I never cry in school) so much that I got excused from my next class to stay in the library. While most of the teachers are liberal, my administration is all rednecks so they told me to "stop whining" and "get over it" even though a teacher allowed blatant bullying in her class.

I would definatly go to the administration or counselors though, especially since your grade is at stake. You also should get your parents involved. Remind the teacher that your 1st amendment rights were violated and that being American means you have the right to dissent or else none of the great progresses in America ever would have existed.

I am sorry to hear of an educator behaving that way. Though I would more than likely have disagreed with you as well you still have the right to express your views as much as anyone else. Where do you go to school? Po Dunk Senior High in Back Ass West Virginia? Thats crazy! Theres no WAY you should stand for this! Unless you used abusive or foul language inappropriate for school then you have every right to say anything you want!

 

Why bring the ACLU into this? This is the reason our education system is so terrible, we're not preparing people for the real world. Once you're out of school your opinion doesn't meant shit and your boss won't give a dam about your opinion on Iraq.

If a teacher ASKS for your opinion, then you give it. No, your boss won't care, but he won't be asking your opinion and then, in essence, docking your pay because you disagree with him. She recieved a bad grade unfairly and there's nothing wrong with righting that. It would be the same thing if she was given a 0 because she was a girl.

 

in the south, ive only had 2 liberal teachers in high school. one was a lesbian and the other an aging hippy.

I could only ever figure out maybe 2 of my highschool teachers political leanings. The rest were VERY close lipped about it and never seemed to grade unfairly thank god. You should definitely take this up to the principal, and if he/she won't do anything about it, take it further and further. And of course get your parents behind you. Hopefully they'll back you up whether they agree with your views or not. Good luck hon. If i were a social studies teacher and one of my students disagreeed with my statements i wouldn't give them a 0, but i would grade them incredibly harshly.

 

You need to tell your parents, your principle, and if necessary the board of education, that is totally unacceptable

 

Radical doubt is the path to awareness, if you are a social studies teacher and the students don't question what your saying then you have failed as teacher.
