Okay, since when did "short" become 5'6''? Yesterday I went shopping for pants at Old Navy which everyone hates but that's too bad because they are usually the only store I can find pants to fit my length of legs and huge hips... anyway, so I get a couple pairs of pants, some short lengths and some regular lengths and I go try on like ten things... NONE of them fit. I have an inseam of 24'' (if that) and the "short" pants that I just bought have an inseam of about 28''. My entire foot is engulfed by denim when I put them on, not to mention the surrounding 10 feet.

For anyone who is short (under 5'2'') and has some hips, where do you get your pants because this hemming stuff is garbage? I might as well be sewing them myself.

yikes!! I have gotten most of my jeans from old navy for the same reason...I am 5' even, so it is such a struggle!! I have once gotten a pair from gap online in extra short...

I am 5 feet 1, and I just wear my pants long I guess. The bottoms, especially in the back, are always a bit torn and ragged from being dragged on the ground, but hey...it gives them character. Most places now sell short, regular, and long. Gap, Old Navy, Alloy, Delia's, you can even find them in some department stores with L.E.I. and brands like that. Or, you can learn to sew and hem pants yourself or get them hemmed by someone. I guess I just wear mine a little long, I think it looks sort of cool. Long pants look good when you wear high heels too.

I always wear my pants long... about an inch past my feet, but these new ones are just unacceptable. I get that tattered loock too, but it only lasts for so long. I'm sure it would be easier to buy pants if I wore heels with them, but I'm either barefoot or in flip flops.

I need a surger so I can make my own pants.

Well..i dunno..it is just ridiculous...i almost can't believe it...i have the same problem.....pants, skirts, short pants are always four to five inches too long..which makes sense..because i'm 5-2 and short now and days is 5-6 5-7....it's so lame..

I found that some stores have very kewl petite clothing...also stores like express have short, regular, and long sizes..

it just comes down to the nicer the store..the better taylored clothes ur gonna get...

in my fashion experience..i have found that this is one of the things where u have to be willing to spend more money to get quality items...it is the same w/ us thread making monkeys...we put so much hard work into our items and we deserve to get what they are worth..right ??

and why do u have to justify shopping at old navy..who cares if some of this silly kids hate old navy..i think the store kicks ass...i luv shopping there...especially clearance! :) BUT i usually do have to hem pants..:( and yes..it is garbage..!

For the most part i do sew my own clothes..i enjoy being able to taylor them to my own body...

Well hey at least you're a bit luckier then us tall girls who can find nothing but super-short pant legs...I'm always happy when the weather warms up so I don't look silly wearing (unwillingly) cropped pants.
But your point is still relevant because it seems as though pant manufacturers are increasingly making stranger and stranger decisions in terms of how long the legs are in relation to the size of the pant. For example: i seem to be finding a neverending supply of size 16 SUPER short pants...why? i don't know anyone shaped like this. etc, etc. Yes DIY sewing=good option.

Well, I am 5'5'' and I always find that pants are too long or too short. I used to think it was bc I was fat, but I wear a 3 or a 5 so thats not it. I think that designers are designing for models and not regualr people. Half the stuff that people sell (and buy) is not flattering on anyone except sticks.

i hear you all... the short mamas that is. i too have aproblem finding pants to fit not just because I am 5'2" and have some hips on me but also a rather hefty backside and a teeny waist. so i have to buy my pants two sizes to big to fit my butt but then they don't fit my waist, nevermind them dragging along the floor. LOL

Amen mama! That is exactly the way I'm shaped. I'm 5'2'' on a good day, have large hips and mucho junk in my trunk, and a tiny waist. So yeah, you have to get huge pants to fit over the rump, but then they either bunch at the waist, or when you sit down you show off that nice large rump unwillingly from the pooch in the back.

If I had the money I'd go to Levi because they custom make jeans for like $150, but I'm too poor for that. And I'd make my own pants if I had a serger... but again, that's pretty pricey.

...and those cropped pants, those can either fit me as regular pants (but they are cut differently so they look funky) or they are too short. If there are so many of us short, rumpy mamas... what the hell is the manufacturer's problem? I spit on the model types!

I hear ya! I'm just shy of 6 ft and can NEVER find pants that fit. I'm pretty thin too, so I have to get pants that are too big in the waist to be long enough. Like, I wear an 8, but have to get a 10. So then they are saggy around the butt.

american eagle's petites aren't too bad, depending on the cut. i have two pairs of theirs (0 petite)and they drag, but not in a 'my foot is engulphed in denim way.' usually its if i am wearing low shoes or barefoot but its a nice drag if you know what i mean? they are kind of expensive though :(

I always buy Old Navy because I'm bottom heavy and they fit well. Normally I don't really mind if they drag on the ground because I like my foot being swamped by pants, especially when I wear flip flops.

I also wear jeans and other pants from Kohls but the problem is, I'm about 5'4 so the shorts are TOO short and the regulars are TOO long. So I just kind of deal. I won't hem because on the days I wear heels, the hemmed pants always look shortish. Instead, I tend to tape up the inside if it really bothers me, that way in the rare chance I actually grow anymore (hah!) or if I wear heels, I won't have my pants one permanent too short length.

It's not that much work to cut off a bit and either hem or fray them, far and far less than truly making your own from scratch... but yes it would be easier if I could just buy them... sometimes I'm busy and don't get around to it for a few weeks so that's kinda a pain.
I used to have good luck buying jeans that fit in the US though, brands like Wrangler and the like had them. But I never tried buying any fashion stuff, just the plain models for working with the horses.

I'm 5'2" and I have to try to buy the capris at Old Navy. Then they fit like regular pants. It's so sad. LOL
Mostly though I live in long skirts or patchy cotton pants w/drawstrings that I find on ebay. Then I can just have them hemmed to the length I like. Otherwise, I rarely find pants that fit right.

thats is so true!!! i'm 5'5" too and have a hard time finding trousers that look good on me. i never wear tight trousers cos i look stupid, so i always buy baggy trousers or sort of bell bottoms that make me look more proportioned...really the only place where i can find stuff like that is in this vintage shop i know, anywhere else, the trousers are ridiculously expensive or either too short, too tight, too long, too boring....

i personally have success with gap ankle length. i'm 5 feet, and i stick to capris and ankle. thank goodness that style's in; i've had a much easier time since! also kids 16 sometimes fit (sometimes too long, sometimes too narrow)
