What would be the number one quality you look for when purchasing a pet?

This is my random thought for this Evening. :)

I'm not looking to purchase another pet. I want to do a few things, travel a few places with my family before we decide to take on the responsibility.

I do miss giving and receiving love from my dog. I always petted him and talked to him. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to do that again some day. :)

    • food costs
    • vet costs
    • bathroom abilities - do i have to take it out or can it use a litter
    • do i need equipment - tank, air bubblers, humidifiers...
those are some of the questions i'd ask before purchasing a pet...though, i'd only purchase something that i couldn't get from a shelter or something....like some cool snake or lizard or something.

    ahem, 'adopt'

I've had two pets in my adult life. One was my Yellow Lab Samson. I had just returned to college after a two year hiatus and this fella who was friends with my roomate came over one day and said, 'know anyone who wants a two year old yellow lab'. I said sure, let me meet him. Went to this big ole farm and there came this terror of a yellow lab, complete old yellar, just running up to meet me. He was very nutty, all excited. I said well, do you want to go for a ride Samson? I opened the back door and he hopped right in and off we went. For seven years he was the most loyal and loving companion I could ever ask for in a pet.

My current pet, Jazzmin the Cat. Well, when I moved back home to Vermont this fall and knew I would be working a lot and living in a busy downtown, I decided to adopt a cat from the local shelter. I was interested in these two other cats and hung out with them in a seperate room for about ten minutes a piece. They were cool and I was going decide between the two of them on my next visit when I had my landlords permission. However before I left I decided to look around and meet some of the other ones that were kept individual in pens. Well jazz showed tremendous interest in me and I thought wow, what another great cat, but leaving I decided it would be one of the other two. When I returned to sign the papers and bring one of the other cats home, Jazzmin (actually her name at the shelter was Aruba) happened to be hanging out in a room off the lobby and looked through the window and started meowing at me. So, I brought her home....

So, I guess what I'm saying Peanuts is that when you welcome a new feline or canine family member, they'll let you know that they want to go home with you in some way.

cuddleability. Has to be cuddlygood. Not like, constant, but enjoys being petted and isn't outrageously rambunctious. After that, daily maintenance, like how often/far it needs to be walked. Vet costs (neutering, shots, etc) that it might run up.

My Buddy was very sick. He had a very developed case of hemangiosarcoma . It's a type of cancer that is known as a silent killer. We caught it before it was too late and I had to put my Buddy down. :(

dhs, thank you for sharing your story with me. You give me hope and inspiration for when the time comes...We have 2 animal shelters nearby. :)

Praise you peanuts!! Adopting a pet from the animal shelter is the best way to go. I'd bring them all home with me if I had the money and enough space. There are so many animals out there who need a good home, and not nearly enough people out there willing to give it to them. As it is, we now have 5 dogs here.....4 of which were abondoned by their previous owners. It's so sad.....but I'm getting off topic.

Anyway, when you decide you're ready to bring another animal into your home, I think your only real concern should be how it acts around your boys. Everything else is pretty minor, IMHO.

I was searching the local shelters on the web. There are some very sweet dogs listed.

Right now is not the right time. I think I'm going to spend some time collecting information, getting my bearings. I miss my dog so much. I wouldn't want to feel like I was replacing him. He was a perfect dog.

Last night I actually found a few support groups on the web and after reading some of them I felt a bit stronger, actually a lot stronger. I know many of us have suffered the loss of our best lil' friends and that I am not alone. I found myself changing some of my thoughts about this whole situation and how I can view it without having to fall apart every time I think of my Buddy.

Rainbow Bridge is one of the support groups.

My boys are a HUGE factor in getting another dog. I have to make sure that he/she loves children and is obediant, adaptable, playful, and extremely loving. My boys were always very good with Buddy. I never worried about them or him.

LOL! You have to realize how it sounds when you say, "I do miss giving and receiving love from my dog"... :p

When I pick a pet, the first and foremost thing I go by is, does it look cool? Like, if it's a cat, is it a cool-lookin' cat? If it's a dog, does it look kinda cool and tough?

Adopt a greyhound from a race track. They are the most beautiful dogs and behave really well. After when they turn 2 years old, the owners do not race them anymore. My wife and I plan on adopting one in the near future..............

We will probably end up adopting another Golden in the next couple of years.

I'm not familiar with the Greyhound breed. I do think it is sad though the way they treat them after they don't race anymore.
