I never knew Greenland was important to the U.S. Never heard any past presidents or other politicians mention that we really needed Greenland. There must be more to this with Trump.

Ever hear of the very common map projection that makes Greenland look about 4 times larger than it actually is? Most high school geography classes talk about the apparent expansion of lands as latitude increases.:D

Pure illegal expansionism, similar to Hitler invading Poland.

Trump has no excuse to attack Denmark and has not ruled out using the military for a take over.
We'll see if NATO stands up for one of its own against one of its own.
Part of the Trump plan is to use Greenland to break NATO.

Greenland is strategically important for early warning of missile attacks and as an outpost to monitor shipping through the GIUK gap.
But the U.S already has a military base, Pituffik Space Base, dedicated to these tasks.

More importantly Greenland has oil, gas and rare earth minerals, which Trump wants to control and profit from.
But the main reason, as I stated, is probably to break NATO.

Greenland's capitol, Nuuk, only has a population of 20,113.
Venezuela's capitol, Caracas has a population of 2.9 million.
Trump can easily invade Nuuk, capture Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen and his wife and make up some erroneous reason they had to go.
Like they're weak, or sleepy, or socialist, or liberal...take your pick.

The report is he wants to buy Greenland.....
but if they don't want to sell he'll invade anyway.
And why would they want to sell it?

I do think people(even goverments/media/ect) are taking this bs to seriously...........the US cant take a country(EU/Nato) by force..not going to happen. The US already had(ww2) and still has bases in Greenland, it is mainlly about strategy and resources(and to piss off putin/xi)

I do think with all the Trump(putin) bs.............we in the EU(like Trump says himself)..........let take care of ourselves, outside finance/coin/stupid rules/ect the EU makes. We might want to make our own EU army, wich we already can. West/north/south eu already have modern armies/nukes, just need to learn to coop a bit better;)

F Trump/Putin and for form Xi.................if he tries vikings will come:D

Nato Spokesman says if US takes over Greenland, say goodbye to all U.S. bases in Europe. Yup you read that right. They're promising to kick out every American soldier from Europe and take over all their military bases!

"All your base are belong to us" as they say...

Trump will do whatever he wants, and that includes sending missiles and Delta Force to capture the government of Greenland.

Now, if NATO responds by aiding Greenland, it's citizens, or government by a show of force, like sending in troops to occupy parts of Greenland and confront the U.S. troops or sets up a no fly zone, gives radar aid, anti missile defenses, etc.
Then one NATO nation is fighting other NATO nations and NATO is through and the Europeans better draw up a new agreement without the U.S.

If NATO doesn't respond, except by nasty words and fist shaking...then NATO is done as it has failed to protect one of its members from hostile action and the Europeans better draw up a new agreement without the U.S.

When and if...and I hope I'm wrong...when Trump invades Greenland I hope what's left of NATO, sans the U.S., responds in force. Remember Neville Chamberlain and the1938 Munich Agreement.

Trump has been trying to break NATO for years and Europeans better get used to the idea that they can not rely on the U.S for anything, not military aid, not health assistance, etc., or the international respect for the right of sovereign nations to exist while Trump and the Republicans, et al, are in office..

I think it may be more simple.
There has been an international agreement between Greenland and USA since 1951 specifically to permit the US to use it for
its own National Security. There are numerous US military posts in Greenland.

Greenland would welcome US private investment to mine its resources.

That means there's no need to take over Greenland.

I think it beggars belief that there are US citizens who state that they are patriotic but who don't know this stuff of National interest. Maybe similar ignorance is why T got elected.

BTW the US does need NATO. I guess it will require its break-up before people realise just how much the US needs it. Similar, in principle, to UK leaving the EU. politicians lied and deceived as well as whipped up the public. Now that it's left the EU (2016), there's huge regret amongst those who voted to leave.

However, I said the Greenland plan was likely more simple.

If, as he is clearly doing, Trump whips up tribes against each other, it's because it's his only hope of avoiding lame-duck presidency after November. When people's are at war with each other, they tend not to change national leadership.

Also, my brother is a history graduate from university. He has described how people will think they know what their leader wants and will autonomously act to please him. The killing of that Mum on Jan 8 was a live example and it happened many times in 1930s Germany to please Hitler.

He's a dangerous idiot and others' useful idiot.

He is destroying the long-standing, hard to build reputation the the USA had. Ot wont be re-built as soon as he leaves office because Congress hasn't stopped him, which makes it complicit.

I envisage the damage to the USA being limited (not prevented from getting worse than it currently is), by the Generals who will refuse orders. I've watched two retired 4-star Generals saying that in the past week.

Someone really should inform the ICE thugs about Nuremburg trials. Following orders is not a defence!

I think that he has diminished capacity. He is worried sick about the midterms and is asking for money from his base. He is giving favors to the defense industry ($ 1.5T), the Beef and Dairy Industry, The Natural gas and Oil Industry (Venezuelan Oil), the anti Immigrant Billionaires, and so on.

Asked by The New York Times whether there were limits on his authority to strike, invade, or coerce other nations, Trump didn’t hesitate: “Yeah, there is one thing. My own morality. My own mind. It’s the only thing that can stop me.”
“I don’t need international law,” Trump said, brushing aside decades of treaties and norms designed to prevent exactly this kind of unilateral strongman behavior. When pressed on whether the U.S. still had to follow international law, Trump shrugged it off: “It depends what your definition of international law is.”
