Nicole Paganini, Bach and Brahms. Rock wise; Yes, Deep Purple, Richie Blackmore's Rainbow, Yngwie Malmsteen's Rising Force, Emerson, Lake and Palmer and Electric Light Orchestra.
I don't know why he's so often overlooked, yet his compositions are magnificent. His "Planets" cycle inspired John Williams, among others, in creating the Star Wars soundtrack. Listening to "Planets," I get the impression he was ahead of his time. And when Bach and Mozart can sound archaic, Gustav Holst still sounds very good today
This is fun. This amazing musician does piano covers of classic rock/metal songs and some great originals. She’s also one of the most amazing guitar players around.
Saw a great rendition of "Fanfare for the Common Man" last evening, by the rock group ASIA. Well done, with Carl Palmer on drum (from Emerson, Lake and Palmer). ELP did a great performance of it on their Works, Volume 1 album. I was a big fan of ELP, and enjoyed their version of "Pictures at an Exhibition" when it came out on vinyl, as 4 track surround sound.
I would hike around the pastures atop Tortola in the British Virgin Islands with this playing on my portable cassette deck, in search of psychedelic mushrooms. We would find plenty with this background music filling the heavens! The version I had back then was preformed by noted Russian pianist Emil Gilels.
This is my single contribution to Classical but I have a tsunami of love for this composition and this video. I love all of the closeups of these musicians! Strauss the Son, so many great movements in this masterwork....
Oh but I do have 1 other favorite by a contemporary of Strauss on the 'other side' of Austria-Hungary.... Franz (Ferenc) Liszt, who was known for blending a sense of humor into his music, and this really shows that I think....
Valentina Lisitsa certainly owned this work during that recording, the stucato and rapid use of the sustain pedal was remarkable. Do you remember the priests skating on ice Stella advert that used this work.
Listz was quite the character, but then again I base my thoughts on having seen "Listzomania" featuring Roger Daltry and Ringo Starr... you can watch the film at this link: ASA Lisztomania (1975): Directed by Ken Russell. With Roger Daltrey, Sara Kestelman, Paul Nicholas, Ringo Starr.
I love great violins! and piano! Thank you! Ringo Starr, I'm so curious about that I love power in music, love to feel the music, like symphonic metal, but I can always listen to Beethoven. Dad loves Tchaikovsky and I think my mom (RIP) did too. Neoclassical if I may, I used to love listening to these guys. Cellos! here playing Metallica....
My sweetie told me several years ago that Liszt had Synesthesia, that he could 'see' music as colors.
