my little boy got a bit of diaper rash a few days ago. I got some ointment to put on it and the ointment broke him out even worse and now he has a icky little blister. is there anything gentler i can use to get rid of his rash and maybe make his but a little more comfy? he has been taking off his pants and diaper all day. I think it is hurting him pretty bad so I am letting him run naked!!
No, but if that works go for it. Try putting it on his bottom. Then put some on when you put his diaper back on. It will dry that rash up almost immediately and his bottom won't be so sore. It's impressive actually how fast the stuff works. Cornstarch is also in regular baby powder. (some powders it is)
It sounds like he may have a yeast infection. There are some good prescription ointments which treat this. Experienced moms, who have had lots of yeast in the butt babies use OTC vaginal creams, but it should really be diagnosed by a doctor the first few times, to make sure. Yeast rashes usually have a clearly defined edge, red dots or spots, and is terribly painful and itchy. In some cases, it smells like bread rising. I love Desitin, but it is not appropriate for yeast infections alone. Also stay away from Vaseline, it will "lock in" the thrush (yeast) and make the problem worse. Really, seeing a doctor when this happens is the best bet. Kids can get MISERABLE from a thrush infection. BTW, he doesn't have any thrush in his mouth, too, does he? Some kids get them in both places, as well as the entire digestive trac. A good Acidophilus or Bifidus supplement can really help. Has he been on an antibiotic recently? This can predispose a baby or toddler to yeast. The supplement is MUCH better than yogurt in this case, as dairy makes yeast worse. Most Health Food stores carry it. You can get it in a powder (in my experience it is very expensive like this) or get the Cheweable Acidophilus tablets, and mash them up with a pill crusher. It works better on an empty stomach (I would put it on a damp finger and let the baby lick it off.) But if he won't do this, you can put it into a small amount of apple sauce.
My little girl has that if I use nearly every rash cream on the market (had loads of free samples and thought I was set!!) anyhow I have found the wonder of wonders in paw paw ointment...just pure with no additives, you can get it at the supermarket here, and I also find calendula ointment works really well if I happen to have run out of paw paw...however the paw paw is so nice, it not only smells great it is also great for any irritations and bites you get elsewhere!
We use aquaphor (it's really glorified vasolein, lol, but it's less offensive), for just about everything (diaper rash, eczema, etc). When Willow has a bad eczema outbreak, or diaper rash, we mix that with some eucalyptus oil and a tiny bit of tea tree oil. Takes care of it in a matter of hours, or at least overnight.
Aveno makes a milk bath that is very soft. You can also make your own thats just like avino milk bath with organic ingredients. ( I made some for people for xmas) yummy stuff. Oatmeal based so its really good for the skin. You'll want him to have a dry butt as much as possible a lot of tummy time or naked time so hes not ina diaper and then milk bath....then diaper cream. The cream I used that worked was desetin and balmex my mom used a generic brand on him and it repelled the cream I wanted to use on him and caused a rash to get worse. Also vasaline repels diaper cream too so I have found...gerrr.Also aveno diaper cream works well too.
For small kids, I really like the Lactinex Granules (lactobacillus). Most pharmacies carry it, but you have to ask at the pharmacy, it has to be refrigerated. Calmoseptine will help to "calm" a diaper rash that is severe, if it ISN'T a yeast infection. If your pharmacist doesn't carry it, he or she can order it for the next day usually. Broddeaux's Butt Paste is also good. It has peruvian balsam in it, which speeds healing (by stimulating the capilary bed, increasing blood flow to the area).
ok, maybe this will sound crazy to some of you but i swear by it - bag balm. it's an antiseptic ointment origionally created for chaffing on cow's teats but it works like a charm. bein from farm country, my mom recommended it to me with my first son and i've been using it ever since - 12 years now. you can get it at any pharmacy, otc, it comes in a green tin can. it also works miracles on my hubby's and my older sons 'ball rash' they get in the summertime - livin in florida can be such a trial for a guy... lol!!! it does contain lanolin, just fyi for vegans
When my twins wound up with a horrendous (and I mean BAD) diaper rash last summer due to being introduced to more acidic foods, the pediatrician told me to dab on either Maalox or Milk of Magnesia with a cotton ball, let dry, and then coat with a layer of Triple Paste before diapering. I had a horrible time finding the Triple Paste at any of the pharmacies and ended up having to special order some, but it worked extremely well. Also, just dabbing on the Maalox or Milk of Magnesia and then layering it with a nice coat of Desitin orginal (not the creamy) works wonderfully in a pinch if you can't locate any Triple Paste. I thought this was a weird remedy the first time my ped informed me of it, but my mother, who is also a nurse, said that they actually treat patients with bed sores at her hospital that way as well. We also did plenty of "nekkid" time to air their bottoms out. Good luck, and I hope your little guy feels better soon. Peace.
yeah, i've heard of that too - my mother-in-law is a nurse & says this works but since i've had such good luck with bag balm i stick with that. my sweet hubby, he saw a troop of boy scouts coming out of the woods last spring after a hike, and they ALL obviously has a serious case of chaffin. so he offered his two cents on the bag balm to the troop master - lol!!! nothin like guys standing in the middle of the road discussing their balls, tryin to one-up each other on the worst rash they've ever had...
oh i saw some the other day but didnt pick it up, i will try anything, his little but is so pink i feel so bad for him, the baking soda and nakee time is doing a little bit of good.
