Why are gatherings always on federal land?

Even if the gathering is in a state with legal recreational weed, if it's on federal land then possession of marijuana is still illegal. We get cops driving through constantly to the tune of "Six up!" and some people get busted or have their pot confiscated. So why have it on federal land compared to state or private land?

Private land use definitely out. Nobody wants to take responsibility. You could lose your land!

How could you lose your land if you had the proper permits?

Nobody will give permits to the Rainbows.
You don't need a permit on private land unless it affects the local community.

Still, why could you lose your land if you host a Rainbow Gathering?

And why not state land, like a state park?

State parks are not wilderness. They are used by many others for recreation and gatherings, which oftentimes need to be reserved and paid in advance.

Camping would only be allowed in designated spaces. Can you picture the rainbows doing that, open drug use too?

All it takes is local complaints about nuisance, arrests for whatever Trump charges they can dream up, damage to property, streets blocked, no parking for miles...

Do you have any idea how big these things are?

Yes, I've been to several gatherings.
So you say federal land is the only way we can go, and until weed gets legalized federally we can expect to be harassed at the gatherings?

Probably even if weed were legalized. Local complaints, gung ho redneck LEOs. They'd come up with something.. Whatever happened to Billy Ball??
https://foresthistory.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/Ball-Billy.pdf I just answered my own question. He was one of a kind, but I'm sure there are others waiting to take on the role of overzealous Incident Commander. https://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/05/us/05rainbow.html

I know what rednecks are but what is a redneck LEO?
Anyway we can deal with rednecks, convince them not to come back.
And the gatherings are held in remote locations, so there aren't normally any local complaints unless one of the Rainbows acts up while in town making a grocery run.
I would just like a gathering where the cops aren't constantly driving through.
