Noem (ICE Barbie) is upset about ICE not being able to use restrooms at Broadview's municpal building.

DHS Secretary Kristi Noem indicates ICE may expand in Broadview

    excerpt:

Johnson’s video also showed Noem and some federal agents being denied entry into Broadview’s municipal building, contending that ICE agents wanted to use the restroom. A man standing behind the municipal building’s front glass door denied Noem and others access inside.

“Now that’s what (Illinois) Gov. (JB) Pritzker says is cooperation and keeping people safe,” she told the right-wing embed as she walked away. “We were coming out to do some operations, to pick up some guys with criminal convictions and the city police wouldn’t even let us use the restroom.”

ICE should let people into its detention facility to see the conditions.

FBI agent reportedly relieved of duty after not agreeing to stage a perp walk of former FBI director Comey.

FBI agent relieved of duty over refusing Comey perp walk, four people familiar say

    excerpt:

Even if Trump succeeds where his predecessors failed and creates conditions for Palestinians and Israelis to live together peacefully, a Nobel Prize would still be a long shot.

Lawmakers from both parties have criticized the Trump administration for launching deadly attacks on alleged foreign drug boats. Though he has embraced the title “President of Peace,” Trump just rebranded the Defense Department as the “Department of War.”

    https://www.npr.org/2024/10/19/nx-s1-5156027/alien-enemies-act-1798-trump-immigration

    excerpt:

But the surest way to prevent the act from being abused, Yon Ebright writes, would be for Congress to proactively repeal it.

Some Democratic lawmakers — Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Sen. Mazie Hirono of Hawaii — have tried in recent years by introducing the "Neighbors Not Enemies" Act, which would repeal the Alien Enemies Act, but hasn't gained traction.

Omar has resurfaced her calls for action in light of Trump's recent comments, writing on X that "it's past time we put this xenophobic law in the dustbin of history where it belongs."

    excerpt:

The Alien Enemies Act specifically allows the president to detain, relocate, or deport non-citizens from a country considered an enemy of the U.S. during wartime:

“Whenever there shall be a declared war between the United States and any foreign nation or government … and the President of the United States shall make public proclamation of the event, all natives, citizens, denizens, or subjects of the hostile nation or government, being males of the age of fourteen years and upwards, who shall be within the United States, and not actually naturalized, shall be liable to be apprehended, restrained, secured and removed, as alien enemies.”

Federal government is taking ownership of Canadian mining company.

Leavitt talks like it's going to reduce the U.S. national debt.

The White House thinks taking partial ownership of a Canadian mining company will reduce the national debt

    excerpt:

The White House has taken this messaging further. "This is a creative solution by the president of the United States to tackle our nation's crippling debt crisis," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Wednesday. "The president is focused on how can the United States government make more money, how can we make our country wealthy and rich again? Cutting some of these unique, creative deals with companies around the world and here at home is just one way that the president is seeking to do that."

    The author encourages Democrats to:

Liken ICE detentions to Uyghur detention camps.

Link North Korean military parades to Trump's parades.

Compare federal troops raiding American cities to the Tiananmen Square massacre.

Relate Trump’s interference with the Fed to China’s manipulation of its currency.

Link Trump's firing of people for delivering bad economic news to Beijing covering up its bad economic numbers.

Equate Trump's federal government buying of company stock to the state-run economy of China.

What you need to know about the government’s 10% stake in Intel

    excerpt:

Last year, Biden awarded Intel $8.5 billion in grants and $11 billion in loans, plus tax credits, with the expectation that the company would build plants in Arizona, New Mexico, Ohio and Oregon.

Then, in August, Trump called for Intel’s beleaguered CEO Lip-Bu Tan to resign, alleging ties to China. Days later, after Tan met with Trump, the president called him a “success,” before announcing that the federal government had bought a stake in the company.

To Shivakumar, the Trump administration seems to believe the government “should get something in return for that grant, which is equity.”

What you need to know about the government’s 10% stake in Intel

    excerpt:

"In a rare move, the United States has invested in a private company that is not in immediate danger of failing or dramatically impacting the economy. On Aug. 22, President Donald Trump announced that the federal government had obtained a 10% stake in Intel, the computer chip designer and fabricator. The company’s press release said the government purchased 433.3 million primary shares of the stock at $20.47 per share, equaling 9.9%.

Though the government has purchased portions of U.S. companies before, in recent history it was typically in order to prevent a major corporation from becoming insolvent and potentially taking the nation’s economy down with it."

The Legal Bases for Government Stakes in Private Firms

    excerpt:

"That said, if Trump begins to regularly require companies to hand over shares as a condition of government contracts or receiving permits and licenses, someone will eventually sue. But a more targeted approach may let the government duck legal challenges. If Congress wants to oversee the government’s acquisition of private assets, or limit the government’s ability to acquire them, it needs to act rather than waiting on the courts."

Trump lied about Biden issuing a tax credit that the public could use when buying an electric vehicle. Trump called it a mandate. It isn't a mandate.

Trump talks like the incentive is government interference in the free market. Yet Trump has no problem with the federal government buying shares of company stock.

The U.S. Government's Growing Role in the Private Sector

    excerpt:

"The idea of the U.S. government taking direct ownership stakes in private companies felt largely anathema to the nation's capitalist ideals. Yet, the current administration is increasingly embracing a more active role in the private sector. This isn't about regulation or tax incentives; it's about direct investment and influence, echoing—but diverging from—past interventions."

Republicans in general seem quiet about Trump having the federal government buy stock in various companies.

It's unusual because they are known historically for wanting to keep capitalism free from government interference.

Outright buying of stock by the federal government is beyond subsidies and incentives.

Bernie Sanders says he's in favor of it. Trump has called Sanders a communist.
