soulive is the shiiiiii, no doubt about it. But my favorite bands to go see right now are bela fleck with the flectones or his trio and robert randolph and the family band. In my opinion randolph puts on one of the best shows ever.
If you love Soulive you will really love Jazzmatic. They are a 2pc organ and drums with a funky sound. www.jazzmatic.com
Soulive basically does for me what Hendrix would have, had he lived. Their Crosstown Traffic is so sick, how he voices it on his geet. They do Who Knows too from Band of Gypsys which is a sick song originally, and just as sick to see soulive play.
Dam I just typed a whole rant about Soulive's style and the connection timed out and I have to re type it. sonuvabitch. I didn't actually finish the previous post, but I thought I'd give another description so others on the forum who might be interested can be blown away by the relentless funk. For those who are into John Medeski's funky playing, like in MMW's more funk, less experimental music, you'd probably dig Soulive a lot. Maybe even more. For a good taste of Soulive, you might want to pick up the self-titled release, it's a compilation of live tracks from the 2002 tour. Songs to check on there (they're all sick, but my favs) "El Ron," "One in Seven," and "First Street." They have a few cover songs, but it's sick how they cover a song because they truly make it their own. In their early days they were playing out The World is a Ghetto by War, and are still continuing to play their rendition of Stevie Wonder's Jesus Children of America. The old arrangement had a real sick talkbox solo, and the new arrangement actually segues (sp?) into If you want me to stay by sly and the family stone. Another cd I would advise you to grab is the dig deep cd from the umbria jazz festival. You can buy it at Soulive's online store. Most people I have introduced to this band locally are pretty much just blown away. They are currently touring also, and their shows are so good. They're playing out some new songs from the upcoming album, and also neal is playing a groovy ass clav solo (i love the clavinet).
I saw them as the middle act in a triple bill in central park: Jon Scofeild, Soulive, and Disco Biscuits. Soulive was amazing, but I have to say the biscuits blew them out of the water (this may have been mostly because it was a biscuits crowd so the energy was just there for them more). Anyway, it was a great show from start to finish, Scofeild's jams sitting with soullive were out of this world. We need more shows like this, where the opening acts pack some punch and get the crowd dancing too, instead of everybody just milling around during the opening acts looking for drugs and paying no attention.
