right, it started when there weren't ways to put out your own stuff really

lables like Matador, Touch and Go SST etc. signed bands that major labels wouldn't touch

indie - short for independent. Can refer to a film or production company that works outside of the Hollywood/studio system.
    1. indie -- (a pop group not affiliated with a major record company)

So wait... what in the hell is the "indie rock" sound??

A band can make music as an independent band, get signed to a big label, and make the same music... how is there even an indie rock sound??

during the "classic" indie era, many of the bands had similar sounds...jangly guitars etc. thus the term indie rock also had a common style

so yea, a band could be classified indie rock even after they were signed to geffen or whatever.

i see it as an era that is over

In the UK, Indie rock meant brit pop mostly

Indie rock is a lot more folkish and lyrically powerful, typically...

Nah... don't make the mistake of confusing indie with Britpop... there was already a thriving indie scene way before Britpop climbed the greasy pole of commercial acceptability... in the 80s, you had The Smiths who are considered by many to be the epitome of a classic indie sound... or go further back to a band like Joy Division who were around at the end of the 70s...

If you ask most Uk chaps to name an "indie" band nowadays, I imagine most would go for something like Coldplay... or Snow Patrol... or maybe something like The Zutons... regardless or whether it is on an indie label or not...
