I'm not old but I'm not a teenager either so I thought I would check out this site I'm 21 years old but was born with a VERY old soul. I thought I would join this site because were I live is anything but HIP!!!! Sparta Tn middle of the bible belt and just this year our local goverment went (R) for the first time in 3 or 4 decades I belive it was. Need I say more!!! O not to minchen they also voted Bush. I am a free spirit and hope that when I graduate from college in June I will be able to do some traveling. My goal is to learn as much as I can from the older generation or the older HIPPIES as it were. I want to your (you all) perspective on the way things are right now. Do you feel that things that you did in the 60's and 70's made a real impact? and What needs to be done now to at cope if not change the situation now? I'am also interested in activism and was looking for some advice on what are the best methods? I hope this was not to much at once but thats why they call me Curious_Jane!!!!!!! Peace,Love,Faith
For so many what we went through the "hippy days" , they seem to have accomplished nothing. Got us out of VietNam - made the vets who went there friends of ours; got the vote lowered to 18 - if you are old enough to die for the country you should be able to vote; changed forever how people view the goverment - made us more suspicious of the talkers to look and see if they walk it as well; made the whole world more conscious of waste and what we do to our environment - believe it or not, the laws are on the books to change the dumping - just the politicians coffers are too lined by the companies, to enforce them; so many of us were civil rights people to that I'll include that - all the third worlders and disenfranchised saw us as their allies..... - Yeah we did some good - and some of us still are - though for many of us what became most paramount was how we lived our personal lives.... O and there were many that "sold out - BUT you see even in the days most of the "hippies" were posers - just were in it for the free sex and dope - it was "cool" ,,,, those who walked it - most of them still Do. Same can be said for every generation and the few in each who try to wake up instead of following the programs laid out for the masses - most people on this earth are not aware of the controls they follow. So no matter how much you activate - does your personal life reflect it ? Walk it don't just talk it ! And today's world - well from my own perspective it seems to be the people who are willing to change their own lives to reflect their beliefs, that ever really make the far reaching changes we all feel are so necessary. Blessings along your Way
OldWolf, Thank you for your words of wisdom. Through out my life I have tried to keep an open mind about what the hippy generation really stood for and not fall in to all the cliches as many of my friends seem to think it is cool to call themselves hippies and all they really know is (Weed is cool and they liked to smoke it) So in alot of ways that is the only thing they relate to the people of the sixties. I used to think that people were scarded and that the main reason noone was doing anything about the current situations in our country the way people in sixties and seventies was because of that fear and that maybe if someone got the pot stired up a little then more people would take action. Like they did in SanFransico with underground newsletter and free info for the public to read. None of that seems to be happening anymore!!!! I'm angery and looking for answers!! Why have people stoped caring the way they did back then? I would love to hear from any one on this as well!!!!! Confused Curious_Jane
I live about an hour south of Nashville. Isn't it hard finding like minded ppl such as ourselves around here???
O Ok I thought I knew you because I have a friend named maggie who lives in cookville. But yes it is very hard fnding like minded people here!!! Thats why I go to the Summer Soltice every year in Red Boiling Springs TN. Do you know it? It is a great place to meet other people of like mind. I am hoping when I get done with school in june that I can do some traveling. It's a big world and know there has to be more people out there who feel some of the same things I do. When you live in the same place your whole life you tend to forget that. What do you do to break away from this place and have fun???
No flmkpr, Nor do I consider what I said to be negative - just the truth. I do not sit injudgement - but that does not mean hiding from what Is or Was. What will be - will be the present Is of what we make of this time..... And the unfortunate truth is that most of us are sitting on the sidelines waiting for something to happen - waiting for the kick in the butt - ... You do not see it that way ?
my apolagies old wolf i guess i was the one with the hair across my proverbial ass that night. and yes i do beleive that there is mutch apathy when it comes to putting words and ideas into action.
Just want to say, I'm in Curious_Jane's boat pretty much. I was born in 1959 - too young for the hippie scene of the 60's (by the time I hit my teens in the 70's, it was pretty much watered down to a fashion style and not much else), and too old to relate much to "these kids today" and their cruelty and cynicism. I know I'm a Pagan Hippie Chick at heart, and I'm hoping to learn as much as I can (or at least reinforce what I already sense to be true) about what that means. It seems to me that the "glory days" of hippiedom were a grand experiment in a different way of living. It succeeded in some ways, and failed in others. I hope we can learn from the past in order to create the world we envisioned back then. I refuse to give in to despair and cynicism. Call me naive - but there ya go. Peace.
