It's a matter of preference...Sometimes if you say to an older 65 year old woman "hey aren't you a good gal (meaning a cheeky bad one!) then she will prefer you to someone who is boring. At the same time females who are 18 to 30 (the default age group that I always prefer) then they probably would and do prefer to be addressed as "woman " rather than "girl.
