Being an older UK male, growing up we wore the same baggy cotton shorts as our dads. By the time I reached my teens in the 1960's these were unfashionable among men under 30 and 'keyhole' briefs were preferred because they were better suited to the close fitting jeans & trousers of the time and provided comfort and support. In addition to needing to be more 'hip', in my early teens the slightest stimulus would lead to an instant and prodigious erection which, without the constraint of close fitting underwear, was embarrassingly apparent. As this happened frequently I soon began wearing classic briefs! By the1970's these had been joined by smaller briefs without the opening and together they were the go to underwear and boxer shorts were worn by old or untrendy men or appeared in comedy films. Fashion inevitably changes with each generation and boxer shorts became in mode in the late 1980's. Lacking the support provided by briefs, these eventually morphed into trunks, a combo of brief and boxer. In recent years there has been an attempt by some designer brands (such as Armani and Calvin Klein) to resurrect the 'classic' keyhole brief but they have not yet regained mass popularity here. From my teens until the mid 70's I wore traditional front opening briefs and then low waist briefs without an opening until the early 90's. Though I tried them, I never liked boxers finding the lack of support uncomfortable I soon switched to cotton trunks from top designer brands like Armani. Ironically, I found all but those from high end designers too restrictive. Despite the negative reputation briefs like Y Fronts and those in high street stores about 10 years ago I took the plunge went back to briefs from designer brands which I find to be the most comfortable. More recently, I have discovered both briefs and trunks made of very light weight material purchased online which are extremely comfortable, breathable, light in summer and warm in winter and look stylish and attractive. I now wear these in addition to the much more expensive designer brands. I have a light cotton boxers I wear under loose fitting bottoms in the summer
