A technique I used to do was take my index finger and lay it parallel to the shaft and slowly go around the shaft just slightly touching the ridge of the glans but keeping contact with the shaft. (This is a great method to get quickly aroused when masturbating.) The feeling was incredible and got the precum going pretty quickly. The most intense pleasure is on the head, and my preferred way is to use lube and really massage and work the head. But this is done in conjunction with rubbing the shaft as well. As I get older using lube and concentrating on the head becomes more and more necessary, but when I was younger I jacked off quite often without lube, just rubbing the shaft up and down.
