(any towns that are extremely liberal...most laidback and musically active....please let me know of them as well....thx)

the University of Vermont is supposed to be pretty hippie-ish. Also most anything in NYC (especially NYU) is going to full of free thinkers.

If you prefer California schools, you might want to consider Pomona and UC-Berkeley.

Other hippie schools: Oberlin (OH), Grinnell (IA), Macalester (MN), Reed (OR), Kenyon (OH)

Warron Wilson college in Asheville's pretty hippie-ish. 'S kinda a commune-type place, all the students work there and help the community. Here's tha site:

i was going to say warren wilson, too! i'm looking into colleges, and warren wilson looks very appealing. they have an eco-dorm, work-on-campus requirement, lots of people pursuing outdoor leadership or environmental studies degrees, tons of student-built hiking trails...i loved the place when i watched the admission video..i would suggest doing so yourself if you get the time. :).

if you are looking for a small school (those are all that i really know of) i would suggest: prescott college in arizona (not in a desert region..:)), university of the atlantic in maine, naropa college in ??? (founded by a buddhist, i believe), any of the eco league schools (www.ecoleague.org).

don't really know of any in california...but you might want to check the above ones out. good luck!

The place you need to go is UC Davis. Home of the annual Whole Earth Festival- the hippiest gathering at any California university. Check it out (see the photo archives):

    http://wef.ucdavis.edu/

I went to UC Davis for 7 years, then stayed in the town of Davis for another 10 years. It's a great place. Great sense of community, happy people; really laid back. Be sure to check out "The Domes", a totally hip student housing community where they grow their own food and have communal dinners and field trips to the wilderness where they frolic nude in rivers in the summer yet discuss interesting topics together as a group. Also check out the Davis Food Co-op, the Farmer's Market, and the Delta of Venus Cafe- a gathering place of the local radicals and musicians, poets, etc. I loved living there- best balance of liberal community, university, cultural diversity, and the easy lifestyle of a small town. You don't need a car 'cause you can bike everywhere. The best part is that is the easiest place in the world to meet people and become involved.
