LOL I find all the anti-TV talk in this thread kinda funny coming from people who are using the internet/computers, a tool which gives you access to all of the modern comforts of a TV and more...
lol, however, the internet is nothing like tv. tv you just sit and watch while it brainwashes you into what it wants you to see. internet, you can search anything you want, you are your own guide, i myself only use internet to socialise, or to help my brothers with homework. otherwise id have no need for it. i dont know how tv/internet are similar at all really.
Said the guy with an amazingly childish lack of understanding of the fundamental difference between computers and televisions. The internet is about user created content. We're losing that because of people like you who don't see the difference. The corporations have walked in, and you try to say this is the same thing, as though we won't lose anything more than TV when they take the internet.
I don't often watch tv..probably will now I'm not doing anything in the daytimes though, it's something to do.
No device is wrong except when you abuse/misuse it. If there's nothing on that particularly interests you and you watch it for hours it seems a little pathetic indeed. But if this happens like once in a few months who cares right.
I think I have much more of a problem tearing myself away from the internet for all of these reasons than I have ever had with the TV. It was a lot worse when I was younger. It's a pretty powerful feeling knowing that you can search literally ANYTHING you want to learn about and you'll usually find millions of pages on that topic to sift through... As for the TV, I do have a few shows that I like, but with Hulu out there, I don't stress too much about making my shows on time. I like the stories, and I like the news, and I like stand-up comedy. Sometimes I would turn it on and then not even watch it. It was just nice to hear voices in the room. I haven't had much of a life the past two years. That's all changing in two weeks, though, so hopefully I won't have to be a sadsack who watches the TV as a replacement for real relationships for much longer. It's easy for me to see how people would get sucked in, though, especially for someone who naturally tends toward being a recluse (I have social anxiety- it's been somewhat of a battle not to become a hermit). I try not to judge those people too harshly. We all have our little escapes...
I havent watched TV since I got rid of my Directv several years ago......... Nothing but rubbish on now!! Nothing worth any value.........
My late mother would not allow a TV in the house, she called them lunatics lanterns. She listened to radio drama, where the physical side was in her mind, rather than (as she put it), some rubbish from a film studio. But this had a very strange twist. One of her favourite programmes was 'Your 100 best tunes', a selection of classical music and opera presented by Alan Keith. One day she saw a picture of him in the Radio Times, that completely shattered her mental illusion of him. She never listened to any of his programmes again and when I asked why, her answer was simple, "That fat lazy slob". As for me, working with film for so many years, I have never been a television fan, but over over the last few years, I watch freeview after dinner, where they are running the old series of films written by Roy Clarke. Last of the summer wine is one of my favourites. I also find some very interesting content on You-Tube. This is one of my favourites, one I shared with Zen. Do watch it when you have 45 minute to spare, It was written by Rachmaninoff as he came out of a period of deep depression. 43 million people agree with me on this one.
Thank you for raking up this old thread after 13 years. In your words, "Nothing but rubbish now". I wondered whether you were thinking of HF at the time.
Hmmm. You all sound like many of my educated friends, who pride themselves in not watching the presidential and vice presidential debates or any political news on TV when they can find out about it at their leisure on the internet. They have the impression, shared I've discovered by many on HF, that all TV news coverage is lies made up by the corporations and that all politicians are equally corrupt. But they can cruise the internet and learn from whatever they find interesting--like 4-chan or Q-Anon!
I haven't watched TV since 2019 and don't miss it at all. Music and a couple you tubers I follow instead. I should get to it and learn my guitar.
