I'm going to be staying ina motel for a little bit and i have recently made the transition to a vegan/vegetarian diet. I'm way limited on storing and preparing and cooking. I'll have an electric burner. No microwave (well right now).

Any suggestions on cheap food that takes little to cook?

seems like your kinda in a tough sopt. Do you have a fridge there or anything? If not all I can suggest is some canned vegan soups like amy's or health valley or somethin'. Its hard to cook on just a hot plate. You might use this oppurtunity to think about a raw vegan diet however. I have never tried it, but it sounds interesting, look arround here there are tons of threads about this.

i plan to go at least 75 percent raw.
Most places don't have fridges. We would have to bring one in.
    But thanks for your comments.

Carrots, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions and most fruits will store just fine at room temperature. Anything more delicate -- greens, summer squash, etc -- just make sure you shop for often. Will there be a good farmers market nearby?

I'd pretty much base your diet on easily storable grains, stuff that can be cooked on the hotplate, then fill it out with veggies. Alternate between raw and lightly steamed, as some nutrients are more available in items that have been at least minimally cooked.

you could live oof fruits and vegetables, buy them in small portions and rinse them off and have them for meals. you might have to stick to basic, plain things

well, i'll be living right down the street from the Food co-op, which has the farmer's market when it gets warmer. I guess I was thinking more along the lines of cheap food for the very lean (financially) weeks.
I'll probably end up doing the raw thing, at least for a few weeks.
    Thanks.

A crock pot might be a good friend for the hot plate.

My SO & I lived without a fridge for quite some time, and it wasn't that bad. We still don't have a microwave but I honestly don't miss it. You can boil water...so that means you can cook beans, pasta, grains, soups... all good, cheap stuff. You can also use the hot plate to stir fry veggies, tofu, sautee stuff. Yum! Just don't make more than you can eat within 24 hours. Who needs a fridge and microwave?

If worst come to worst, go to Taco Bell and get a Bean Burrito fresco style. Treat them like children when you talk because if you mention ANYTHING about no cheese (even though Fresco style says it has no cheese, they almost always put it in), they really can't handle it. You have to say it 4 times minimum. Hang in there.
