Have you seen A Village Affair 1995 British television film? The film is a good one. It was honestly the most saddest and powerful lesbian film I have ever seen!

Here is the main issue IMHO, a movie is doomed to failure if you don't like the protagonist(s). And how am I supposed to like or care about this girl when the entire movie is about her cheating on her partner? She may very well be having a sexual "Awakening" but that doesn't take anything away from her actions. The movie doesn't even present the fiancé as a bad guy either which they often do to soften the blow.

But I'm a cheerleader is the only movie mentioned that Ive seen. I havent even heard of a lot of the movies being discussed. I know the topic is films but I have to mention Marvel's Runaways. That show was so special to me. When you're a queer Japanese girl in America you get to the point where you accept the fact that you're never gonna see you represented on screen. I mean, queer white people and hetero Asians struggle with media representation. And a super hero team led by a female? Forget it kid you're never gonna see that.
And then all of a sudden there's this new Marvel series about a super hero team led by a Japanese American lesbian. And what was so cool as they never shied away from this same sex/interracial love story and treated it with respect but it was also not the focus of the show. And I feel like a lot queercentric shows/movies have to have being gay as the main plot. It's about being gay. There is a difference between a show about gay super heroes and a show about super heroes who happen to be gay. If that makes sense (it does to me :D )
So that show was really powerful and important to me. My demographic within a demographic within a demographic was actually show on screen and not parodied or fetishized by shown as a leader and absolute badass.

I think Deadpool 2 has a superhero who is also gay. But it definitely isn't a main thematic element. It's a nuance. :)

My fave is "Elena Undone". The beginning of this clip includes some conversation of my very first encounter; "Once we go there, there's no going back." "I don't want to go back."

Bottoms!! I missed it at the cinemas which I was bummed about. I loved the L word and there is a wonderful 70's movie called Felicity that is great but she's certainly bi rather than lesbian. Plus it's soft porn. Not that it bothers me, of course. Bottoms and Drive Away Dolls are two movies I definitely want to see.

"Carol" has joined "Elena Undone" as my favorite lesbian movie. I got my copy from Amazon in December. I watched it the next day during breaks at work, and my wife and I watched it together that same evening.

Like "Elena Undone," written and directed by Nicole Conn (a lesbian), "Carol" is based on a novel by Patricia Highsmith (also a lesbian). Cate Blanchett played Carol; it's not clear if Cate is actually a lesbian, but it makes sense that she is. "Carol" was not the first time she played the role of a lesbian. Before that, she played the role of a lesbian lawyer in the Australian series "Rake." I haven't found anything about the orientation of Rooney Mara, who played the role of Therese, who was Carol's great love.

Carol may have been married to a man, most likely a marriage of convenience, because they had a daughter together. But Carol was certainly a lesbian nonetheless. Therese was not her first wife; there was at least one other. Including Abby, who appeared in the film. Carol showed great skill in captivating a woman she fell in love with, namely Therese.

Therese reminded me of myself. A lifelong straight woman, only because of traditional expectations and learned normalities. After Carol knocked her off her feet, Therese finally realized she was a lesbian, and she stayed that way forever.

While watching “Carol” we got an insight into times gone by.

During numerous scenes at home, both Carol and Therese wore high heels. At home. All the time. Did women in the '50s really do that? I remember watching Bridge of Spies, which is set in the '60s. James Donovan's wife, a housewife, also wore heels all the time at home. Or was that just Hollywood? I wear not-so-high heels (2-3 inches) to work every day, my wife wears high heels (4 inches) to work every day, but we take our shoes off as soon as we get home. Just like our bras.

During most of the restaurant scenes, which all took place in a cozy INDOOR setting, both Carol and Therese always had lit cigarettes between their fingers. How my wife and I wish we could still do that! But every time we go out to dinner, we have to sit outside on the patio where we can smoke.

The most moving thing about this film was that Carol lost custody of her daughter for one reason only. She was a lesbian. How things have come so far since the 1950s. My sister-in-law and her wife are not only both lesbians, but each brought a lesbian daughter to the marriage. Lesbianism, along with two-mother families, was completely taboo in the 1950s is now socially acceptable. Today, both are perfectly acceptable.

Ultimately, we found Carol to be a very entertaining film. We have been sharing it with the other lesbian couples in our families: my mother and her wife, my sister-in-law and her wife, our older niece and her wife who got married in November, and my younger niece and her partner.
