The argument by McConnell was that 9 months was too close to the 2016 election to allow a hearing on Obama's Supreme Court nominee, Garland. McConnell didn't have any trouble granting a hearing to Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court a couple weeks before the 2020 election to replace Ginsburg. Amy Coney Barrett was confirmed on October 26, 2020. The presidential election was November 3, 2020.

Bizarre scenarios left to the imagination. Trump could be convicted in 2024. Win the primary and the presidency. Be incarcerated at the time he wins the election.. Pardon himself in January 2025 to release himself from prison.
Trump didn't even know Putin had already annexed Crimea. Putin was waging a war against Ukraine throughout Trump's administration. Trump didn't stop it. Yet he thinks he can stop a full-fledged war in 24 hours.
As expected, in a late evening, last-minute filing before the deadline, Trump wants the trial delayed until after the 2024 election. Trump wants classified documents trial delayed until after 2024 election
Trump wants classified documents trial delayed until after 2024 election excerpt: "The tactic is in keeping with Trump’s typical legal strategy: to drag out matters he’s facing as long as possible while hoping the legal landscape changes. But this time, it’s an effort to stave off a criminal trial that could result in a lengthy prison sentence if he’s convicted — the first ever prosecution of a former president."
Aileen Cannon had scheduled Trump's trial to start in August 2023. The prosecution asked for the trial to start in December 2023 which Cannon hasn't yet approved. If Cannon conforms to Trump's desire, the trial would be delayed a year and three months from her original date (August 2023) and at least eleven months from the requested prosecutor's date (December 2023).
If Trump wins the 2024 election and has his way with the delay, the end of the documents trial could potentially occur as Trump is becoming president again in January 2025. He could try pardoning himself if he has been convicted. Assuming he wins in 2024, if the trial still hasn't finished by the time he assumes office again, he could proactively pardon himself (similar to Ford pardoning Nixon proactively or Trump's pardon of Bannon whose trial hadn't yet begun). In that scenario, Trump wouldn't be convicted in the documents case. He could claim that he would have been acquitted if the trial had finished. It would give him a cheap way out, similar to how he settles civil cases in private when he knows he would likely lose in an upcoming public trial, allowing him to claim that he 'won'. The public can't prove he lost because the details of the settlement don't go public.
A self-pardon would likely be challenged in the courts, but that would be during a second Trump presidency and would be in uncharted territory and another legal mess. The Republicans in the Senate likely would not run Trump out of office in an impeachment trial in a second term for self-pardoning. They protected him twice during his first term. Numerous if's and maybe's would need to play out just right for such scenarios to occur. But with Trump, anything is possible.
A judge has scheduled a trial to start in March 2024 for Trump's criminal case in NY related to Stormy Daniels. Those are state charges for which he couldn't pardon himself as president. Trump has a civil trial in NY set to begin in October 2023 for alleged financial fraud.
