I have just paid for 12 months web space. I was offered an SSL certificate for $100. Is it worth having?

Yes. Unless you don't want a secured web space.

Is the server where your webspace is, running cPanel or Plesk? They both run one of two ssl cert systems, Let's Encrypt and another, the name of which I don't readily recall. Both are free.
I've read that some search engines lower a site's ranking if it's not running on https (as opposed to http)

A paid SSL cert is not at every time a bad idea. The cost free certs like Let's Encrypt have not enough trust in many cases like a bigger business website or a online shop. Consider, that the cost free certs are updated at each 3 months. And yes, a trustly cert are costly.

    http / https
The search engine ranking is only in this cases relevant, when the website content are in competition with other website content. Whit exclusively content, this is irrelevant.

There are webhost provider was have webspace with cost free SSL certs and automatically updating.
