i teach at a private school in a low income area of an inner city. i am, among other things, the lunch moniter. boy, did they stick the wrong chick in that positition! EVERYTHING is so nasty there! our kids are huge; i'm small now, but when i tell you that, starting in the THIRD grade, the kids are larger than me, i ain't shittin you! they drink 'orange drink' which actually advertises on the carton to contain 0% juice. how could that be?! i brought it up to the (large) principal who contended that the parents just won't pay for real juice. this only costs 25 cents, so OF COURSE the kids buy 3 a pop. geez. i walk around like a broken record, even breaking the rules; if i see a kid with over 2 cartons i make them return it and drink from the fountain. kids bring soda in their thermos. they have a choice of cup a soup, pizza, or some nasty crap - chik nuggets, cheese steak - daily.

but...i managed to get candy to be NOT SOLD in the cafeteria! no more! although it was on terms of too many wrappers lyin around, still...
this is so nasty. the friggin nurse is implementing a nutrition program in the school. the friggin diabetic nurse ONLY drinks diet sodas and juices. she 'hates' water. how could that be?!
they won't let me run the nutrition program - i'm 'vegan' afterall. they're afraid of my rhetoric. i bring in little packets of 'top 30 foods' type things and receive snorts as reply.
at any rate, there are many people out there that are striving to create a better environment for our kids. i personally strive for that for all 170 of mine daily. any small step helps.

This is so frustrating. But I got to tell you, I thought I was feeding my son well. Then I looked at the "Organic Juice" I buy my son. It clearly says contains 10% fruit juice. I never looked before. I thought I was buying organic so it has to be good. 10% juice can you imagine. I was so disgusted. I'll read the labels a lot closer from now on. And I will never buy Santa Cruz brand again.
