I think groovatron is gonna be the next big band from the midwest..and i can't wait for it to take off for the guys! when i read the reli article on umphreys the whole time i kept thinking that really does sound like groovatron...um is from south bend right ??? the groova crew is from hammond...and..well..their story is somewhat similar..anyhow...that was my shameless promotion..:)

you gotta be kidding me. ive have the misfortune of being at 4 umphreys shows. the last one i say, ray's music exchange opened for them and smoked. i was the only kid dancing. then unphreys came on and you see about 50 kids tryinto dance to 1000 meaningless notes. we split after a song and 10 seconds into the next. if your gonna fill your post phish void, atleast fill it with something respectable, like booze or women.

Umphrey's kicks ass! there are a lot of other really good jam bands out there tho.
Psychadelic Breakfast, Smokestack, Ratdog, STS9, Particle, Perpetual Groove, Rusted Root, The New Deal, Garaj Mahal, moe... the list goes on and on!

I'll take Railroad Earth or David Nelson Band over Umph anyday.

I've seen Umph once and had a blast really enjoyed myself but they're just okay.

I would'nt travel to see them

How would you classify Umphrey's sound as compared to other jambands? More folk/country/bluegrass like ymsb, railroad earth, leftover salmon, etc. more jazz/funk like mmw, agp, etc., more rocknroll like panic, hookah, and cheese, or more electro like sts9 and bisco? I know that's like a total oversimplification of all those bands, I just want to get a rough idea of what they sound like.

As far as the rock-based jambands go I would have to say that with phish gone my favorite is now ekoostik hookah, their songwriting and singing are miles beyond that of panic, cheese, moe., etc. in my opnion, even if their instrumental skills may not be. I think Alexander II is possibly the best epic ballad since terrapin station.
