Does anyone have any suggestions for novels like 1984 i.e. the dystopia genre of writing? Brave New World, Animal Farm are also examples of this group of books. Anyway, let me know, Im looking to pick up some new reads. Spanks
1984 really reminded me of Fahrenheit 451, but I told this to a friend who also read both and she didn't think so, so maybe it's just me...But anyways, Fahrenheit 451 is a great book.
The Giver is somewhat similar from what I can remember. I haven't read it in years because it's a book aimed toward younger people, but it's still a good read about a utopian.
A handmaid's tale the martian chronicles what about movies, theres lots like Brazil, the Matrix, Running Man, etc.
Besides 'A Handmaiden's Tail', Margarett Atwood recently came out with another dystopia story book. 'Oryx and Craite' I read it. It almost reads like a dream.
yeah, except i'd LIKE to live on pala... ummm, brit scifi writer john brunner wrote several rather scary novels, try: stand on zanzibar the sheep look up the stone that never came down jagged orbit heck, check out heinlein's "lost" first novel _for us the living_ or niven & pournelle: _oath of fealty or olaf stapledon: odd john or stanislaw lem: the futurological congress_ maybe samuel butler: erewhon or h g wells: the sleeper awakes (or _the time machine_) heck, even john updike had a recent novel (set in ~ 2020...)
Or Lord of the Flies. It's kinda like Survivor. except that if you are voted off, you are hunted down like the pig you are
try The Brave New World, was alright and very similar plot line... also gives some thoughts to consider
The author of Brave New World also wrote a book called "Island" It's suppose to be about a perfect society. I don't know though, haven't read it yet The DaVinci Code is also a really good book. It's about religion though, but makes you think!
read "Gifted Disabilities" by Justin Blackburn. get it off www.booksurge.com it fits every category. i tell everyone to read it. 1984's got nothing on this shit.
I've never read it, but We by some russian guy was the original negative utopia. Some say that orwell and huxley got their ideas for their negative utopias from this book. In the back of my copy of 1984, it was tlaking about how in 1984, they got people to comply through torture; in Brave New world, through Drugs; and in We, through actual brain sugery. I heard, however, that We is best if read before you read 1984 and Brave New world. Again, I have no clue, that's just froma review I read. I still plan on reading We and Brave New World, however, considering I've already read 1984. Has anybody read We? if so, I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.
Brave New World is great. Ken Kessey has some excellent books which you'd enjoy too. Theres one set in alaska which i enjoyed, but cant remember the title.
"The Giver" by Lois Lowry, and it's companion book "Gathering Blue" are similar to 1984, although they're very low-level reading. I think I read them back in elementary or middle school, but I recently re-read them, and I got soo much more from them this time around. If you enjoyed 1984, I'd recommend them.
While I haven't read the book yet - it's on my list - I once read a review of That Hideous Strength by C. S. Lewis that compared it to 1984. It's the third part of Lewis' Space Trilogy, so I don't know how well it stands on its own.
Ya'll are forgettin bout Philip K. Dick! Dayum! Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, The Minority Report, Imposter, etc.
