    What a lame argument.

You know what, I am a conservation biologist who is doing research at Big Bend National Park on what the effects of global warming (climate shifts-percipitation) will be on biodiversity. I am then going to Kenya this summer to teach the natives about land managment. I graduate in one year, after which I will be in the peace corps for three years helping people.

Do you see me going around saying I care about the world/environment more than you/other people because I am doing this....Of course not.....why?......because that is ridiculous and I don't hold things over peoples heads.

And you know what the reality is, the work I am doing is going to do a lot more help then your petty bullshit about not eating meat, I figured out what I needed to....my work here is done.

what makes me laugh at this red herring argument is that on average, the land dwelling animals western humans consume are predominately herbivore. Sure fish/crustaceans eat insects and other fish/crustacians, and free range chickens get some insects from scratching, but on the whole, we prefer herbavores in the West.
as for the lame "animals die to harvest/plant food" argument, do the voles and plovers miraculously survive when the corn/soy is planted for animal feed?
Sometimes a change as slight as altering planting by two weeks can allow the mountain plovers to get their nesting over with (Colorado State University findings from 2002, I believe)

ok, so you don't go around spouting it - you think it though, or you woulnd't have written this. do you actually think that veggies go around looking over peoples' shoulders and reminding them that veggies are morally better than them? because we don't.

i think that i'm going to spend the next few minutes counting how many times you've said "morally superior" and "biologist" in the last 3 threads.

Edit: just cuz i think its funny... we now know 4 times over that you're an environmental biologist, and 9 times over that you think that we think we're morally superior to you.

I must apologize, I was away for the day.

I am indirectly killing animals? You are mistaken. I will once again correct your definition.

    http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=indirectly

Now that that's been settled ... MY ACTIONS DO NOT KILL ANIMALS, NOR DO THEY SUPPORT THE KILLING OF ANIMALS. I no longer buy from industries that kill animals; I am making a conscious effort now to buy hemp clothes and hemp merchandise from retailers that I know the backgrounds of. Furthermore, I eat organic foods and try to know where my food comes from.

I was born into a world where big industry causes animals to suffer because of their harvesting methods.

BUT I REBEL AGAINST THESE INDUSTRIES BY *NOT* SUPPORTING THEM.

*I* am not the cause for these animal's deaths, just because in this society I cannot PERFECTLY adhere to my morals. But any fool who is part of the working class of this capitalistic society can tell you, that perfection of morals in my position is simply not possible. I strive EVERY SINGLE DAY to ensure that less animals are killed or tortured by big industry, and I DAMN WELL do not support them.

I do not harvest the grains, I do not give the industries the money to pay their workers to harvest the grains. Therefore, I AM IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FACT THAT ANIMALS ARE KILLED. If there are inconsistancies in my morality and my actions, then they are not things that I have the power to change just with a snap of my fingers. I am not God; that title belongs to you, as you have so arrogantly claimed it for yourself, my bold little one.

So let me drown your logic here by showing you mine:

Person A is a person who runs a business that hires people to harvest grains.
The business that hires people to harvest grains employs Person B to harvest the grains in a particular manner.
Therefore, Person A is responsible for Person B harvesting the grains in a particular manner.
The manner in which the grains are harvested hurts animals.
Therefore, Persons A and ultimately, Person B, are responsible in some way for the hurting of animals.
Person C buys the grain from Person A, which includes giving Person A money which can be used to support the business.
Therefore, Person C indirectly supports the harming of animals.
Person D (myself) does NOT buy the grain from Person A.
As a result, Person A has less of an ability to run his business, which makes it harder for Person A, B, and C to directly or indirectly cause the harm of animals.
Therefore, Person D is not responsible for the harming of animals, especially when the harming of animals was present EVEN BEFORE PERSON D WAS BORN.

    It is only logical.

That atrocity of horridness is not a failure of myself, it's a failure of Persons A, B, and C, as explained above. I also eat a lot of fruits and nuts, and when I am at my house, the vast majority of vegetables are GROWN ORGANICALLY IN MY FAMILY'S HOME-TENDED GARDEN.

And because I am (indirectly) SAVING the lives of countless animals as a result of my lifestyle, while you are devoutly DESTROYING them, that does indeed make me morally superior by the standards of 98% of humanity. Since morality is relative, it does not guarantee that I am morally superior, and you may very well see it differently than I. However, by general consensus, I am indeed morally superior.

I make a decision to reduce animal cruelty and death everyday. My veganism saves 93 lives per year. Sure, animals may very well die in the production of my clothes or whatever. With veganism, I am making the promise to REDUCE animal pain and suffering when I can. According to my values, that makes me more moral than yourself. Not one person can walk the earth and not harm a single thing ever. However, we can make the moral choice to try.

OK, so maybe we are stuck with something getting killed in order for us to eat. Doesn't it make sense to at least try to limit that killing?

It is not ironic that veg*ns don't eat meat while animals do.

It is only a process of the brain; a next "logical step" in the mental evolution of mankind.

Carnivores and omnivores eat meat because they have to to survive. They require to get their protein from meat, and they don't have the intelligence to realize they can get it from other places.

We do. So why are we still eating meat? It's completely pointless. Instead of eating meat, we could eat soy, and get more amounts of higher quality protein, and at the same time, ensure that less animals are killed each year because of our actions.

It's only the next logical step. But you already know that, so why are you challenging what you beleive in under the guise of challenging what we believe in?

well first of all animals (predators) HAVE to eat prey to survive...they don't have a Fred Meyer they can jump in their car and drive to to buy some "Instant Food Just add water" they are not lazy like humans are. Not ALL animals eat meat just like not ALL human beings eat meat. And no one ever said being vegetarian/vegan makes them "superior" i don't look down at people who eat meat at all, they make their choices, and i make mine.

You omnivores always ask the same questions. And you always believe it stumps us!
Carnivorous Animals NEED meat to survive. We don't.

Animals KILL THE FOOD THEMSELVES. Hunting is fine, and humane. But factory farms are not. And we aren't made to kill....where are our natural weapons? We have to use tools in order to do so.

Our brains endow us with the cognitave ability to fashion tools that can help us survive. Chimpanzees use twigs to draw termite out of their mounds. Chimpanzees are also omnivorous. Should we try do change chimpanzees' inherent nature to make them stop creating tools that allow them to eat other animals?

we don't think of ourselves highly for being veggie. at least i don't
and those animals that eat animals - that's the way they survive. if i can survive without meat, i will survive without meat

This is an old argument that is easily picked apart. Animals need to eat other animals in order to survive, while Humans have the choice and can survive either way.

You're right. Some animals eat meat (however; cows and chickens do not, whcih are the main meat people eat) to survive. *We*, however, have other options and can still stay healthy by eating them. Also, animals do not cram the animals they eat into tiny, filthy cages where they are beaten and deprived of correct nutrition, sunlight, their parents/children, and any other correctly humane treatment.
