i am going to be making my own tribal drums i was just wandering what are some of your ideas for going about this!!
I don't know how to make drums, but some people pay sky high prices for different designs on the drum. Get a wood burning kit and do them yourself. I bought some cheap handrums once and made them beautiful. Then I sold them for more when i was low on cash. I miss them.
can you take a workshop or something? i made a drum once a long time ago. did you try looking on google for drummaking instructions?
There is another member who posts in the Hip Galleries who is very into drumming. His name is wizarddrew. He would probably be able to answer your questions.
There are lots of way, one of the easiest though would probably be to obtain some extra large gourd, ands work from there...
___________________ Try going to one of the PowWows in your state and asking the sacred drum person. We have mostly Powhatan Indians here. I know the trading post where I lived use to sell trible equipment. (There was a place in Williamsburg that sold furs but they got busted because it's illegal to trap or sell here. (I guess though you can get drunk and kill deer.)
_______________ Hey I like you, you're smoke-free. )I'm smoke free as well and I'm determined to be the first person on earth to weigh what I should without smoking, drinking caffine or alcohol, or using drugs, wish me luck.)
The choice of wood is important (you want a nice hardwood), but much more important is the choice of skins. I've found that the best skin for tribal drums, is Veal skin from a supple young cow - be sure to dry the skin yourself. Commercially dried skins have too much moisture to achieve the haunting base reverberations that you find with hand-dried Veal skin drum heads. Make sure the skin is fresh - some Veal ranchers will allow you to come and remove a portion of the skin right before the cow is slaughtered, just bring a sharp knife and a couple strong friends, and you can usually get half a hide in an hour. Good luck & peace.
