I know backpacking and hostels, are probably the best way to go. But if you want to travel from one city to another, but way of public transportation, any suggestions? Also I will be flying into London, to meet up with friend who lives there, so how do I get from London to the mainland? Thank you so much for your help

    peace to all

well you could try to find someone with a car who wants a travelling buddy.

the cheapest way is to get an interrailcard that gives you free travel by train in all europe for a month, it costs like 500 dollars or something like that i think. ok i know you didn't want public transportation but if you don't find anything else i reccommend this way of travelling. i don't know if you have interrail in america but it's great way of travelling europe.

........some years ago I was nearly raped by a weirdo hithchiking from paris to cologne on my way home. the weird guy suddenly drove into a field and tried to rape me, he hurt me a lot and pulled out a lot of my hair. it was so horrible... I just remembered "don´t scream, be cool and quiet" and started TALKING to that guy, crap things like "you don´t have to do THAT, you´re such a nice guy" ... it worked and he left me... I never hitchhiked since that day and bought a car.

it´s safer to travel by train, there are a lot of nice people to meet... travelling by plane through europe is cheap with ryan air & co. - all flights are about 19 euro WITH tax... it´s not worth to risk your life hitchhiking.... if you chose to, then always with a fellow traveller, but never alone..... :-((

Yeah Ryanair and very cheap or as Carnelian mentioned interrailing can be a great way aswell. I'd personally hitch-hike but proably not if I was a female.

hmm.I've never had scary situations ,I've never met strange people on my way.I hitchhike most in Poland and in some places in Europe.I LOVE this way of travelling,I can meet lovely people and I don't have to pay.For me this version is the cheapest and the best :)

hostels ar probably a fun way to see europe but definately not the cheapest. grab a tent and just stay wherever (that's not really legal everywhere but usually nobody cares) you can hitchhike or take a train and camping places are pretty cheap too if you need a shower and wanna meet some fellow travelers... i do that every summer, if you got any questions just ask!
