This is a theological question. My good old friend "R" is an advocate of negative population growth. He wants to end the world by attrition. But he is a serious practicing catholic. Isn't that an oxymoron? Or is he herectic or hysterical? He's the one who thinks God is a catholic. But I think God is bigger than that. strange. SO. any help in unpuzzling this? tia

Once I caused him NO end of concern when I said to him, "Well hey, ya know, maybe the thing is God likes the idea of humanity. Maybe he liked it at first and has liked it all along and maybe He's not really gonna come back and end it. ??? Imagine that life, in theory, could just go on forever. What if He was just joking???" And HE, the one who is believing catholic thought that was just horrible. Isn't that wrong? Scandalous even?
He is not Catholic. He may BELIEVE himself to be Catholic, but he is clearly just wrong. And any real Catholic would be able to tell that if they met him. Edit: Not that I don't prefer his method of thinking over a Catholic one ...

Hikaru A gilette mach three, is great for removing hair. But when you need truth as smooth as a babies bottom. U use An Ockham Mach 1. It moves at the speed of talk. And leaves no crap attached. Occam Ps..Occam has already given the greatest praise he can to William Of Ockham. He believes the principle of parsimony is a human truth. And uses it as a powerfull tool of reason. And he even took up the name 'RazorOfOccam' But to be honnest, that was mainly because it is cool.
He IS Catholic though! He's been known to carry around a small wooden icon of the Madonna&Child. GOes to Mass all the time! Usually stands in the foyer or wonders amidst the coats at times but still his heart is there (I don't know if he'd leave to have a cigarette, he might, but he's not a smoker). cheers.
Maybe he's actually very bright, and is purposely being contradictory to confuse you? Either that, or he is misguided. He can't possibly be Catholic and at the same time want to kill off all of humanity, including himself. Catholicism rewards the faithful and moral with eternal life and happiness in the Kingdom of Heaven, does it not? Certainly there are many faithful and moral Catholics out there. So he would not want to end their lives, but rather reward them, if he were actually Catholic.
This guy is definitely Catholic! I think he should be nominated to the post of Bishop or something. Negative population growth by attrition is a wonderful idea and should be preached from every pulpit. It is one of the better ideas that I have heard from that quarter recently and gives me new hope for them. And yes, God is Catholic, ask any catholic and they will tell you. I don´t see any problem with people just dieing off. Your friend has seen the light from the belly of the beast itself, the catholic church, and come up with a solution to save the earth. We should be thankful for his courage. If more catholics begin to think like him, things will change and we may look forward to a better future. And possibly, with the intelligence that your friend has shown so far, he might even start to question other things, such as the concept of "god" and the catholic church.
well you're right about my friend. He may be the smartest person I know. And he's definitely the funniest (guy at least). But I don't think you can correlate faith to intelligence. Lots of very smart ppl have been convinced of God's existence. And as you know (sorry to be trite) lots of fools have said "There is no God."
I was fortunate to go see CONSTANTINE tonight w/my friend Ryan. He hated that movie. If you see my post on that movie you'll see that I thought very highly of it. No matter. But I tried to clear up his negative population growth position. I asked him point blank if it was heretical adn he said that he followed the teachings of the church and this has never been specifically addressed. BTW, you can achieve negative population growth through a zero birth rate. An obvious fact which may not come to some ppl. ANYWAY. So I asked him if it was defined by the Catholic church that God is in fact a Catholic. And he paused for a second and then answered slowly "Well, God is first of all a Patriot." (referencing the N.E. Patriots Football Dynasty, of course) and thisabout killed me. I haven't laught so hard at a person since probly the last time I saw old Ryan. SO I asked him, "Well, ya But isn't God also a Muslim? And a Mormon? ...." and he said "Maybe" But he is FIRST of all a patriot. PLEASE no offense to Muslims who believe that God is first of all "One" He is ONE. And a patriot to boot. Whether he is on the side of the west or the east in the coming clash of civilizations, though, only future will tell. Thanks for the cool replies to my THEOLOGICAL QUESTION thread!
