I have never learned to play an instrument. I have always wanted too, but I just never had an instrument to play. Today I made up my mind, I am going to teach myself how to play the banjo. I have always loved folk and bluegrass music, and I have always loved the sound of the banjo. I have often thought that if I learned to play an instrument, it would be a banjo. Well, today I bought a banjo. It's nothing fancy, just a cheap made-in-China open-back. Not exactly top of the line, but good enough to learn on. I also picked up the neccesary finger picks, a lovely $5 nylon strap, and a Banjo Primer for Beginners book. I'm stoked! Well, I've been practicing the exercises in the book all day, and while I'm not quite ready for a concert performance, I can definitely feel myself improving. I'm getting the hang of it, and it feels great to actually make music. I've been playing the same damn two-chord, one roll(a roll is a sequence of finger picks) song all day and it's the sweetest song ever written if you ask me. Wow, playing music feels great, even when you keep screwing up or have to take it verrrrry sloooow. Before long I will develop my skills and I'll be able to play proper music. So, any other banjo players in the house?
Yes, it is indeed hella fun. It's frustrating too, but I suppose that's just part of the fun. I'm just happy that I'm finally learning to play an instrument. But it is fun though, the roll I've been working on today is 3-2-1-5-1-2-3-1, just switching between g and c chords, it's really simple, but everyone starts out simply I guess. I find it fun to see how fast I can play without messing up.
awesome! I play the banjo, too, but the guitar is really my primary instrument. banjo for me is supplementary to help me with my right-hand coordiation. it has such a lovely voice... great choice, jwam
i tried to learn banjo once, but i finally decided that i'm a listener, not a performer LOL my dad plays, and i grew up on bluegrass.
