anyone here seen the movie "hotel rwanda?" its so great, you guys. if you haven't seen it, please check it out sometime soon. i saw it last night with my friend jessi. it really got us going, as does any movie dealing with the shit going down in the world. on the drive home, we discussed the helplessness we feel when we learn about such horrific happenings. i'm only 17, i can't really join the Peace Corps yet (you have to have a degree and such) or the Red Cross or anything like that. yet here i am, really wanting to do something to help all the starving, all the sick, all the victims of genicide...the list goes on. what can i do? is there any organization out there that wants kids like me? I really feel like i'm supposed to be helping them. can any of you help me out?
Well, you can join the Peace Corp when you're 18, right? That's only a year away. In the mean time, you can always volunteer to help people right here in the US...
there are programs in parts of africa you can volunteer to do a number of things i think, try googling it... you could sponsor a child in a third world country... you can also start visiting http://www.thehungersite.com and all of the other sites they link daily. http://www.furthur.org/ie/ is probably one of the best foundations to donate money too if you want to do that, they focus on helping the more real charities and causes if you know what i mean. some small environmental stuff you can do is recycle more, start local recycling programs, build a compost pile, and just be concious of the impact you have on the earth.also, dont know if you are a vegetarian but we could solve world hunger very quickly if we simply started feeding all the grains we feed to raise cattle to our own species, and also not as many rainforests would be cut down to make room for more cattle fields and farming space
What happens if you sponser a child and he dies? do you get a refund? About Schmidt with Jack Nicholson had a good subplot about this. i also heard that you can sponser a whale thru greenpeace, and you get the meat when it dies-but thats an awful lot of meat.
