I have been having horrible anxiety and finally let the doctor give me a perscription for lexapro (he's wanted to for months) after having the worst panic attack of my life yesterday and having them in my sleep almost every night for several months. My question is he gave me 10 mg in the starter kit and a perscription for 10mg once a day after the starter kit. I know the standard dose is 20mg-why did he give me 10 and will it actually help even though it's not the standard dose? I told him I only wanted to be on them untill I finished school which will most likely be this may-did he provide me with the lower dose so I wouldn't become addicted?

no i wouldn't think so(i dont think lexapro is addictive). Sometimes people just dont need that much. Im on a certain medication and the stard does it 20 for my as well but im only on 10. its just not so severe i need the full amount. the same may be for you.

Most medicines like that work from building up a sufficient amount in your bloodstream over time... Guess you didn't need so much just yet?

I have taken Lexapro. I can't take 10 mg. I cut it in half to 5 mg and sometimes cut that half in half to 2.5 mg. 5mg works awesome right before my period and during.

In my opinion I wouldn't go up to 20 especially since you haven't been on any meds for anxiety (or have you?)

I'd take it slow so you can see how your body, mind, and nerves agree with it or not.

Personally out of all the medications I have tried this one works the best.
    :)

great thanks laura. The doctor said it's a good one and will be easy to get off of when it's time. I was on paxil for awhile and had awful withdrawls I was on 20mg a day-which was way too much I felt stoned all the time and gained a lot of weight. He said lexapro was weight neutral it won't make me gain and it won't make me lose. I've lost 13 pounds since the last time I went in about a month and a half ago because I am so anxious-it was an awesome side effect of anxiety while it last maybe I should have let it go on for another month or two heh. I'll stick to the ten for now:)

Paxil doesnt get you high, neither does lexapro, but lexapro is great for depression and anxiety. Not addictive at all.

no paxil made me feel very out of it and I didn't smoke pot that often then so it wasn't that. I'm glad to hear that lexapros not addictive. I have a hard time doing something if I can't do it perfect and I've just been not doing stuff because I have so much fear that i'm going to fail and I've been doing horrible in school.

oh it is horrible I remember I ran out of it one morning and I laid in bed crying for almost an hour later in the afternoon that's when I knew I had to get off of it. and whenever I would smoke weed on it i would become really weird and edgy.

10mg is the standard dose. Most people are on only 10mg. Maybe about 20% of people go up to 20mg.

Lexapro is not addictive at all, though you will need to taper off it slowly when you stop, to avoid side effects.
