Well I'm not that old to remember the original - only the above version (and don't remember the McCartney/Lennon story - & the label states 'Raskin' - if that was the claim, wouldn't Macca have been sued - like Harrison was in later years??). Anyhow, for those who do remember the original - here's the Russian rendition:- For clarification:- Those Were the Days (song) - Wikipedia
I was at Portsmouth for 'Navy Days' in August 1956 and watched HMS Thesius set sail on her way to the Suez Canal !!!
Yes, correct, I seem to remember some dispute about it a while back, it all got silly when somebody tried to suggest that the russian peasants had nicked it off Paul McCartney, lol
Collecting the coupons out of fag packets, the more you saved the bigger the thing you could get, I remember one of my aunties, she was smoking like a chimney one day "are you feeling stressed?" someone asked her, "no, I just need to get more coupons before the offer ends on this drill for hubby" she replied. Obviously this was in the days before the internet and the cigarette companies used to produce little catalogues like once a month or something, each offer usually only lasted a month, then went off. I remember in Embassy fag packets they had a small blue coupon, it was valued at 5 in a ten pack and 10 in a twenty pack and they had crazy offers, things like 400 would get you a set of plastic measuring spoons, they were probably about 30p of the market, 5000 would occasionally get you a Black and Decker drill. It never occured to my aunty to just buy the fags, open them and take out the tickets and smoke the fags later, oh no, she'd open one pack, smoke them and then open another.
The cig machines----put in a quarter and get a pack of cigs with a nickel change between the cellophane and the pack.
Poor moles! I remember when hardly anyone had a color TV. When candy bars were just a nickel...oops that's from a song. Popsicles were a nickel too. You could buy Beatles trading cards for a nickel also and though a ticket to a Paul McCartney concert is far beyond my reach I saw all 4 Beatles in 1966 for less than 15 bucks! I remember when MacDonald's was brand new, when kids wore heavy steel skates for use on the sidewalk. Kids did stuff considered dangerous now with a loving parents blessings. There is too much to list...DAMN I"m Older than dirt
Stilts. Never see kids on stilts. Gas was 18 to 24 cents. You could NOT put 5 bucks worth in a car! No TV. Cars all looked like 30s and 40s models. Movies 12 cents under 12 years old. 25 cents over. 2 movies, short subject, cartoon and war news. Running free all day from age 6--no crime worries. Putting together a go-cart before go-carts from a lawn mower engine and wood. Steering was by ropes pulling on a wooden axle we made. Soap box derby wheels.
Radio : Lets Pretend on Saturday mornings. (plunk your magic twanger, FROGGY!) --and off they'd go on a story. The Green Lantern Superman The Shadow---( "who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of man?) Joe Luis boxing matches.
Benson and hedges did the coupon thing Gratis points they were called. Made great roach board! I am old enough to remember a pound note And ha’penny (half penny piece) With a half pence you could buy 4! White chocolate buttons with hundreds and thousands sprinkled on, one day I bought my full 50 pence pocket monies worth, my mum took me to the shop because I had so many sweets she thought I nicked them! Turns out they were a legitimate purchase and I was a greedy little bastard! Yum yum.
Yeah phantom nan is visiting again! I’ll have ten red band please...... Not these days, now grey haired old men get asked for I D!
