My point being they still haven't worked out why only 5%, and what that 5% have in common

And there has certainly been a whole bunch of money thrown at Polio over the last 111 years

From what I’ve read of the vaccine, one of the first batches from a laboratory in California was tainted and had the exact opposite effect, it infected hundreds of people with polio.

In some ways it was a blessing because stricter government regulations were imposed on the production of vaccines.

6 days in a row of 1000+ new deaths in the US bringing our total to nearly 150,000.

By the RNC in late August the number of deaths are expected to range from 170,000 - 180,000

It was supposed to be Gov. Ron DeSantis’s shining moment standing up there in the podium with Donald Trump…lol…

Thanks for the info. I was 10 at the time the Salk vaccine came out and I don’t remember hearing that story. After your post I checked online and found that the bad vaccine was a batch from Cutter Laboratories that somehow contained live viruses. I got my first dose (of apparently uncontaminated vaccine) at school in the fall of that year. The real tragedy of the story was apparently the problem was discovered by Federal oversight people but somehow didn’t get passed along to prevent the use of the bad batch.

Well in Australia we are being held hostage by one idiot state premier

"Mr Andrews said the government would have to look at shutting down industries if outbreaks continued.

“If we were to continue to see outbreaks, if we were to continue to see people quite obviously attending work when they shouldn’t be, then every option becomes on the table,” he said."

Coronavirus Victoria: Premier Daniel Andrews threatens to shut down industries

Well, well, well, finally, so at least one CNN writer is admitting Trump was half right:

Pandemic's perfect storm: Uptick in cases this winter may be more serious than the initial outbreak
    By Katie Hunt, CNN

(CNN)Health care systems in many places struggle in winter. Conditions such as asthma, heart attacks and stroke tend to worsen in colder temperatures, and some infectious diseases like influenza spread more easily, which means facilities face a greater patient load.

This year, the coronavirus pandemic could create the perfect winter storm, and scientists say countries need to prepare for a potential uptick in cases that could be more serious than the initial outbreak.

In cold weather we spend more time indoors in poorly ventilated spaces — exactly the conditions that are likely to make the novel coronavirus spread more easily. What's more, coronavirus cases will likely become more challenging to track and trace given Covid-19 symptoms are similar to those of winter respiratory bugs. Governments may also find it harder to enact lockdown measures on already quarantine-fatigued populations.

The Northern Hemisphere may have had a mild flu season last winter, but there is still the risk of a flu epidemic this year. Plus, the pandemic has disrupted and stretched health care in many countries, leading to a backlog of patients and exhausted frontline workers who are still reeling from the staggering number of cases so far.
The Academy of Medical Sciences in the United Kingdom has modeled what it described as a "reasonable worst-case scenario." The number of Covid-19-related hospital deaths between September 2020 and June 2021 in the UK could be as high as 119,900, the academy suggested. This projection is more than double the 45,000 deaths the UK has experienced so far. This number does not include potential deaths in care homes, which have accounted for 30% deaths in England.

Prepare for a potential uptick in Covid-19 infections this winter - CNN

So people that didn't take the lockdowns seriously are responsible for winter now?

The leading cause of polio for a certain amount of time was said to be vaccinating with live virus. I believe the switch to dead virus still armed the body to fight the virus but did not cause it. Just remember reading that years ago , but have not looked it up.

How to kill off your family and get away with it................

14 members of Texas family test positive for coronavirus after party

More than a dozen members of the same family in Texas have tested positive for the coronavirus following a family gathering where most if not all attendees did not wear masks.

A family member told NBC News in an interview that one person has died and another is on life support after a party in mid-June led to 14 members of the family testing positive for the virus.
Tony Green, who hosted the party for his parents, told NBC that he woke up with symptoms the morning after the gathering.

Green did not provide the names of his family members but told NBC News that one elderly family member, his partner's grandmother, had died after contracting the disease.
Green's father-in-law remains on life support.

Which means they all didn't get infected at the gathering, the family group Tony was with were already infected a couple days before the gathering and didn't implement the right measures to not infect each other

And wearing face masks isn't the most important measure

If Tony actually got infected initially, when the wife came home from the grocery store or the kids came home from school and didn't stay away from the toilet after an hour after one of them had used it, waiting for the air to settle or he had picked up one of the kids spoon or fork and not washed his hands before or after

Then nothing about face masks or that family gathering has much to do with anything

Unlikely whilst in their family home they are wearing face masks around each other

And nothing to say at that larger family gathering 3 subgroups were already infected before they got there, and it's just co-incidence they were all at that gathering a couple days after 4 of the 14 were actually infected

Reading stories like that, just assuming they all got infected at that gathering, then assuming it's mainly because they all weren't wearing face masks is all actually helping to spread the disease

Main vector for transmission the world over is still the family home. Even if you want to believe facemasks are more important than hand washing. You should be wearing facemasks around those you have the most prolonged daily contact with; the people you live with. That's more important than strangers who spend a whole three seconds walking past you in Walmart

Even if some did get infected at that family gathering, you have no idea whether it was because they shared the same toilet, or the same cutlery, or the same handrail rather than it having anything to do with facemasks

    Wash you hands
    Socially Distance
    Wear a mask

These are the three main ones you've all heard repeatedly over the last 4 months

Which one of those is far more important than the other two?

Let’s just say I‘m not going to hold any family gatherings any time soon, despite the positivity rate here in the commonwealth which is hovering around 2%

Yeah, pretty sure it does, if aerosol transmission was the primary cause, thus face masks or no face masks the most important thing

Then it would have spread a shit load faster across the world between mid January and mid March before any country had locked down

And in the US since loosening restrictions it should have also spread a shitload faster, and instead of one such story in the papers every couple weeks like Hotwater just posted, there would be 100 such stories a day

And that's even with it spreading 6 times slower in summer than winter

I heard about a potential vaccine, I think it was another company in phase 3 trials as well. I dunno... From what I understand of how it's being conducted, it didn't instill a ton of confidence.

Apparently all the test subjects have to follow all protocols like everyone else is doing with social distancing and what not. I'm not sure how they gauge the vaccine is effective like that.

Another thing I heard that wasn't particularly hopeful, practically all companies working on a vaccine are utilizing the exact same method to try and kill the virus, so basically if it doesn't work, all of them have to go back to the drawing board.
