A musical moment - Monty Python's Every Sperm Is Sacred is so funny. and whoever said nightmare before christmas - so yes Muppet treasure Island is pretty damn funny - the big musical number finishes and ten they all look appalled and say "uh what are we singing for?" "I feel so stupid" - it's a great way to do a musical.
i think mine would have to be rocky horror picture show or mabye a rather recent one would be the phantom of the opera
Oh. My. Fucking. Gods. I can't believe nobody has mentioned True Stories. Watch True Stories before you make your lists, you damn heathens.
I agree with many of the movies listed.Somehow even though I was in the mood for it, I could not get into West Side Story.Hey nobody has mentioned The Blues Brothers! In a way it is a companion piece to Rocky Horror, it that it appeals to the same audience. Not originally movies but remade as are the Dennis Potter Trilogy: Pennies From Heaven (I have not seen either), The Singing Detective and Lipstick On Your Collar.Anyone seen the film versions of the first two?
Hands down, Jesus Christ Superstar. "Christ, I know you can't hear me, but I only did what you wanted me to. Christ I'd sell out the nation, for I have been saddled with the murder of you. I have been spattered with innocent blood. I shall be dragged through the slime and the mud. I have been spattered with innocent blood! I will be dragged though the slime and the mud!" For those of you who know the show... is that not the greatest part? Judas' death, that is.
Moulin Rouge was a pretty awesome sight when I saw it on the big screen... Apparently Chicago was good, but I've not seen it yet.
well firstly, obviously, sound of music .. but no one has mentioned Mary Poppins!!! come on, people!! a spoon full of sugar makes the medicine go down...
Chicago!!!!! Or Nightmare Before Christmas!!! Or Rocky Horror Picure Show!!! nope, chicago best musical, NBC best movie, and RHPS just the best thing EVER!!
Jesus Christ Superstar - So many sublimely great moments. One of my favorites is when the priests are singing - in a dark, forbidding, minor mode - "He is dangerous" and the disciples respond, in brilliant contrast, with the main theme "Jesus Christ Superstar" every hair stands right up. Hair - Again, an abundance of brilliant moments. Along with Woodstock, this captures the spirit of the hippie experience as authentically as anything we are ever again likely to see. Yellow Submarine/Help/A Hard Day's Night - The Beatles' best, what more is there to say? An American In Paris/Singin' In The Rain - I am secure enough in my heterosexuality to say Gene Kelly just blows me away. Hedwig and the Angry Inch - Makes me want to break out my old Bowie records every time I see it. Masked and Anonymous - One of the most underrated films of 2003 and worth seeing just for Bob Dylan's rendition of "Dixie" and the little girl's a capella version of "The Times They Are A Changin'." A dark comedy that carries far more meaning than it initially appears to. The Point - My childhood, and, consequently, my adulthood, were greatly enhanced by Harry Nillson's offering of animated enlightenment. Everything and everyone has a point! Head - The Monkees surreal feature. Smoke 'em if you got 'em. Singles - Grunge rocks!!! Fantasia - Years ago, long before his legacy mutated into the your-childhood-for-sale McWalmartoons corporate empire, Walt Disney was a creative artist with few equals. This series of short cartoons from the 30s and 40s is a masterpiece that weds classic animation and classical music. And although musician's biographies and concert films, are not, technically speaking, musicals, I feel someone should give honorable mention to Alice's Restaurant, The Doors, The Buddy Holly Story, Ray, Bird, Straight - No Chaser, Stop Making Sense, The Last Waltz, Pink Floyd - Live at Pompeii, The Song Remains the Same, and Monterey Pop.
